The Morning After….

The morning after.

A blast from the past.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a deck full of young boys/men eating greasy bacon, eggs, halloumi and toast. It brings back fond memories of days gone by when Finn organised Friday and Saturday night soirees for his friends. It’s been a while since there have been 6 breakfast guests. I secretly love it. It makes me feel like a real “live” Dad and validates the size and eclectic nature of our house.

Finn had his 21st Birthday celebration last night at a restaurant named Hunter and Barrel at Eastland with 8 friends. This was the perfect group and location for him. The room was decked out like a library which is appropriate for Finn’s ascthetic. Georgie and I had ate a meal in a different section of the restaurant with Ross and Marli, parents of 2 of Finn’s guests.

The boys (Finns’ teenage year friends) are scattered all over Victoria now … Cape Patterson, Bairnsdale, Yarraville with only a couple left in Mooroolbark.

Overall it couldn’t have gone better for Finn.

That’s it for the “childhood” days, they are now well and truly over.

Now it’s whatever life has in store for all of them. Que Sera Sera.

It’s almost 10 years since we moved into our current house. The longest that I have lived anywhere since French St and East Bentleigh way prior to that. I’ll have to make a list of all my houses one day, there were so many of them. Each one a microcosm of what was happening in my life at that moment in time.

My life has definitely been full of change, mixed with a bit of stability along the way. Finn has well and truly settled into the predictability of a family home and safe space that he can call his own.

For some reason I have recently found myself briefly pondering what life might be like on planet Earth without me. I haven’t quite got words for it but the reality is that life will go on and before too long I won’t be missed. But that’s OK.

What that means in the bigger picture of things is open to interpretation but really I’m thinking that it doesn’t mean much at all. The natural scheme of things and the universe doesn’t really give a shit about me or any other individual currently alive for that matter. Like everything else in the universe it’s all about the ebb and flow. Creation and no creation with a bit of destruction thrown in for good measure, but when you really look at it destruction is a form of creation.

When I look hard enough I see patterns everywhere. These patterns all seem to have something in common whether it be a cell, a body, a galaxy. If I was a physicist I might understand a bit more clearly, but I’m not. Like pretty much everything else the only meaning is that which I can inject into it myself

I’m happy to just enjoy each moment as it arrives and must remember to continually create the miracle of life, instant by instant. Fleeting moments of discovery and creation.

This brought up the subject of Relevance. What an unusual concept. It’s always been there but it’s only been called that since the digital age. I’m sure that there have been many other names that have described it. What does one need to do to become relevant? John Lennon, Jack Kennedy, Miles Davis, Ernest Hemingway and countless others have been relevant based on their actions and creations and all of them are remembered because they helped to shape our society, which is in a continual state of change. The actions of people like these have influenced others and changed directions, viewpoints and mass agreement whether it has been in music, social issues, politics, writing and even fashion. It’s all about agreement. Somebody does something new and different and then somebody else finds it appealing. Once enough people have seen it or read it or heard it enough times it embeds itself in the culture of the society that it exists in.

Once again, like the ever-changing waves in the ocean that have no lasting form, just energy and motion. It lasts for a fleeting moment and then it’s gone.
