I’ve Wanted A Scooter Since I Was A Kid

First published in early November 2019

Last weekend we had been back from Bali for only one full day. While we were still there I got an e-mail from JB offering this Segway Ninebo Max Electric Scooter for 30% off the full price. I drooled and bided my time to talk to Georgie about ordering one for each of us. I actually put it off until we got back home because I was convinced that she would say a big resounding “NO”.

By the time Saturday came, I had broached the subject and just as I expected Georgie wasn’t too impressed with my somewhat childish desires to have an electric scooter BUT check out the specs.
“This is the Segway Ninebot MAX! The first thing you will notice is that this scooter is much bigger and feels much more durable than the ES2, this means that the MAX will give adult riders better comfort on those long trips. Speaking of long trips, the battery in the MAX has been expanded to give a massive top range of 65 km compared to the 25 km in the ES2. Adding to the comfort of this scooter is the 10″ tubeless pneumatic tyres. These tyres are puncture resistant and provide a smooth and grippy ride. The Ninebot MAX is powered by a rear 350W hub motor that can climb a maximum incline of 20° and there are 3-speed modes to select from. All your stopping needs are handled by a drum brake in the front and electric motor brake in the rear. Both are activated by pulling on the one lever and will bring you to a smooth but firm stop. Folding the scooter takes seconds thanks to the large and sturdy locking mechanism and the extra large deck gives you way more space to stand on.”

To cut a long story short, by the time I decided that nothing could stop me from getting 2 of these babies I found that it was easier said than done. Firstly, they were sold out online. Then on Friday I found one at JB in Eastland but that was it, there weren’t any others left for the special price. I rationalized that if I had one and Georgie didn’t that wouldn’t work because we couldn’t go on any trips together. I spent hours ringing around all thge JB stores in Victoria and just as I was about to give up I found that the Frankston store had one demo model left. I was frantic by now so I hopped in the car and made a beeline to the south.

Now it’s a week later and I am so glad that I persevered. I’ve ridden the scooter (mine is the demo model and Georgie’s is still in the packaging) several times and it is amazing. Just one more reason to live healthily and happily to 100.
