Our Eclectic Home & the stuff that makes it our Haven

The yellow tree in our bedroom courtyard rains down yellow “snow” onto the terra cotta bricks like it does every spring. The only difference is that this year I am enjoying watching the tiny yellow buds fall and blanket everything with yellow. It is because I have cast my attention there this year and that courtyard has begun to arise  from it’s hiatus as  a forlorn and forgotten space.

I also just realized that I called it a yellow tree. After 8 years you would think that I would have taken the time to find out what sort of tree it is. But no, I haven’t. I wondered why and came up with the answer that details only matter when they really matter. And the older I get the more I think in concepts and likes and dislikes. I’ve never been one for details yet I can tell you the names of most of the musicians who played in bands in the 1960s, as if that really matters. Most of them are now either dead or are old men remembering their glory days.

I’m not a detail sort of person.

I think that I view life conceptually. I don’t have a better word in my vocabulary but I’m certain one exists. Broad brush strokes are easier to perform and I’m happy with that. Just as long as no one asks me for specifics.

When that happens I’ll wish I had of taken more care to research the finer details and even do so for a while.

I can walk past a pile of “junk” every day for 189 days and then one day I become obsessed with creating a beautiful space where that pile of “dusty misplaced items” have been invisible for all that time.

Hence. My new project.

I plan on photographing all of our nik naks, a word I have no idea how to spell correctly but something that is an integral part of my sense of space and place.

My nik naks have defined my homes and spaces for decades.

I’m not certain whether Georgie just tolerates them or whether she really has grown to appreciate them.

They are the bits and pieces that I have collected on my journey through life. Symbols of a time or place that I once inhabited.

My reasoning is that the act of photographing them will cause me to create the spaces around the house and turn spots that have become invisible black holes  back into spaces that jump and cry out to the observer “Look at me!”
