My Daughter is 39 Today

Today is Allissa’s 39th birthday.

We are sort of “catching up” with each other in adulthood.

I turned 39 in 1991 when Allissa was 8 years old.

In 2020 we are irrevocably equals on our own individual journey through this life.

The father and daughter aspect of our relationship somehow has taken on a secondary role although the paternal bond is still a hugely significant part of our association.

Joel took Allissa on a hot air balloon journey.

Hopefully she would still want to indulge in our long  and sometimes meaningful discussions even if I wasn’t her father and be my friend independent of the restraints of parenthood.

That sort of sums up how I feel about our relationship now.

It has transcended father and daughter and become a “meeting of spirits” where we can discuss almost anything about ourselves and our viewpoints on life which generally and thankfully align.

I suppose every parent has to travel that journey. Some never arrive at this spot. For them just being Mum or Dad is enough.

Either by luck or design I am blessed to have a daughter who is open to new ideas, change and resilience no matter what unfolds along life’s journey.
