Random Existential Thoughts…

I was listening to a podcast this morning and I became very aware that we are all, as conscious beings perched on the precipice of infinity. Whether we have or have not already experienced this unfathomable concept is abstract and to be explored some other time but it is a certainty that as a conscious being it is possible to conceive the concept of forever.

Whether it is understandable is another thing altogether.

What prompted me to explore this thought was something that followed after I had the first thought.

What is to fear more … a future where there is no awareness of anything, absolutely no consciousness of anything including pain, time, loss, fear. Yes, the list could go on forever.  Or an infinite number of lifetimes that include the potential of all of the amazing qualities that are associated with life plus the certainty that they will all contain a certain amount of suffering, loss, pain, disappointment, sickness and death.

I for one would certainty play the odds on the second concept of eternal consciousness. I would be happy to experience the positives as well as the negatives just to be able to experience “experience” itself.

But having said that I have never thought of the future in those terms before. It’s always been just the best option to believe that I may continue to exist as a conscious entity in different vessels for time immemorial.

I’m certainly not the only person who has pondered this conundrum.

Another thought I just had is that time ceases to exist for me when my consciousness ceases, so in some existential manner it all boils down to the simple fact that I’m on the ride and I can’t get off … one way or another.

So the conclusion is to accept this. The more I fight against it the more it can have an adverse effect on my appreciation of each magical and precious moment of existence.
