Weighted Vest Walking: Heavier Steps, Lighter Body

Sometimes the universe listens — especially when you’re trying to get fit again after a busted fibula. During my last few weeks in Bali, I began thinking, “What if I added a weight vest to my daily walks when I got home to Melbourne? Surely that would make every step count just a little more.”

Two days later, like magic, a 10kg weight vest popped up on Kogan at a discount. Serendipity? Algorithmic destiny? Whatever it was, I ordered two — one for me and one for Georgie.

Let’s just say I’ve now taken my walks from nice to next level.

Why Walk With a Weight Vest?

Walking is already great. It’s sustainable, low-impact, and the foundation of longevity (as Peter Attia, David Sinclair, and the Oura Ring all agree). But when you add extra weight, the game changes:

🧠

1. Greater Cardiovascular Demand

With 10kg strapped to your torso, your heart rate increases, even at the same walking pace. I noticed I was more in Zone 2 — that magical fat-burning, mitochondria-boosting heart rate zone. On hills, I could barely chat with Georgie. Not that she seemed to mind.

2. Muscle Activation

My glutes and thighs were sore as hell the next day. That’s a good thing. The weight creates resistance, forcing more muscle fibers to fire, especially in the posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings, calves).

3. Increased Calorie Burn

Studies show walking with a 10kg vest can burn 12–20% more calories than walking without one — all without increasing joint load significantly, if you maintain good posture.

4. Improved Bone Density & Hormonal Health

Weighted activity sends signals to your bones: “Stay strong!” This is key in aging, especially post-injury. It also nudges up testosterone and growth hormone output, enhancing metabolic repair and muscle retention.

Weight Vest vs. Body Weight: What’s the Difference?

You might ask, “Didn’t I weigh more before I lost fat in Bali? Why add the weight back artificially?”

Here’s the difference:

Where the weight is stored matters.

Fat mass (especially around the middle) throws off biomechanics, increases inflammation, and impairs insulin sensitivity.

A weight vest adds external load evenly distributed across your torso and shoulders — stimulating the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems without metabolic downsides.

When I arrived in Bali in February, I was at a higher body fat percentage. My recent InBody scan showed that I’ve since gained lean muscle mass, dropped visceral fat, and improved overall body composition. So this weight vest isn’t putting back “bad weight” — it’s more like strategic resistance training on the go.

Progress Log: First 4 Days of Weighted Walking

  • Day 1: 10kg vest, 10,000+ steps, serious glute burn

  • Day 2: Same pace, heart rate noticeably higher

  • Day 3: Rest day (walked without vest)

  • Day 4: Wore vest again, felt easier, almost comfortable

  • Today: No more glute soreness, stronger stride

It’s subtle but powerful — like a stealth workout built into your routine.

Who Should Try This? And Who Shouldn’t?

✅ Good for:

  • Midlife or older walkers looking to build muscle and boost cardiovascular fitness

  • People recovering from injury (gradually, post-physio clearance)

  • Anyone wanting to sneak resistance training into their day

🚫 Be cautious if:

  • You have spinal, hip, or knee issues

  • You’re unsteady on uneven terrain

  • Your posture’s not great — the vest will exaggerate misalignment

Start with 5–10% of your body weight and build slowly.

Closing Thoughts: Load Up and Lean In

I’ve been walking for decades, through all sorts of health chapters — from weight gain to cancer recovery to clean-living in Bali. But this simple addition of a weight vest feels like a genuine next step — pun entirely intended — in training smarter, not just harder.

Every step now feels like a low-level strength session. And with my fibula healing well, I’m using every tool I can to regain balance, power, and metabolic resilience — one loaded step at a time.

If you’re already walking daily, adding a vest might just be the easiest way to turn movement into transformation.
