We got Finn’s haircut fixed up yesterday on the way to the gym. Georgie and I are walking again. I left the gym yesterday with aching muscles, sweated in the sauna, got cold in the cold plunge and ended up eating a whole lot of crap at the Sayan market last night. I even got almost an hour deep sleep. The one thing that worries me this morning is a slight yet distant cough which I will not allow to develop any further. We also organised a room at ParQ for the last week of our stay.
I don’t think we could have fitted much else into the day yesterday.
I’m feeling positive about what’s happening with Finn although there is no evidence yet that he will change his lifestyle apart from a gut feeling and a certain amount of hope on my behalf.
The land is slowly moving forward, Ajus came to see us yesterday but his plans were not what Georgie was after. The PMA TVB bank accounts are now set up with passwords etc.
I don’t really have a lot more to say about life this morning.
Tuesday October 17, 2023

We’ve been in Bali for a little less than 8 weeks. Finn has 3 full days left and Georgie and I have 13.
I’m sort of excited about returning to Melbourne, mainly to spend some time with Allissa before she heads off again in December. 10 weeks and we will be back in Bali once again in mid January.
10 weeks to make a whole lot of bookings at the villa and somehow magically pull off a whole lot of money.
Life is amazing, it is resilient, ever changing but at the same time extraordinarily fragile. All it takes is letting your guard down at the wrong time and the energy that runs the body can peter out in a flash.
I am pretty certain that I’m on the right pathway to a long and healthy life. I looked at some photos of myself over the past couple of decades last night which was good in it’s own way because I got to see the results of the hard work that I have put in over the past 5 years.
We went to the gym yesterday and I did a decent workout and then had a sauna and cold plunges. Finn and I had haircuts although I’ve got to go back with him this morning to get his haircut fixed up.
I’m not going to kid myself, the task ahead with Finn is a big one. I just realized that I’ve been asking him to take a look at his goals and what achieving 26 kgs weight loss in 12 months would mean to his life but I just also realized that I need to do this exercise as well. What does it mean for me as a father if I can pull this off with his co-operation? He’s like a little bird that should have left the nest long ago but due to a set of circumstances that were never confronted he stayed. A Man Child. It’s almost like he has two personalities, one being tender, compassionate and vulnerable yet with the capacity to constantly learn and broaden his scope of knowledge, to question the machinations of the world and to show love to those around him, the other seems to be a brash, narcissistic bully who thinks that he is better than almost everyone around him, constantly critical and possibly pessimistic, angry, short tempered as well as unable to easily communicate. A dichotomy of cause and effect. One minute open and the next closed.
My goal is for him to love himself, to be fit and healthy, to be in control of his emotions, to be tolerant and compassionate while still being strong and unrelenting in regard to what he sees around himself, to have lots of good friends and to be a good friend. I would love for him to cast of from the mothership and make a proud and successful life for himself.

The new week has begun. This is Finn’s last week in Bali for this trip. Yesterdays excursion down to Sanur was a huge success although we had a few small blips. Finn was feeling a bit down by the time we got home but pulled a rabbit out of the hat and recovered enough to allow me it to sleep easy. My theory is that he is coming up the “havingness scale” and has gone up through “waste” and “have” and arrived at “confront”. I’ve never thought of these steps in this way before, by this I mean I’d never thought it through and realised that confront could be an uncomfortable place to be when it comes to changing one’s life, body and friendship group. The truth is that we all have to face our demons and the only way we can bring about change is to confront them. I will attempt to write a project that might be acceptable to Finn. Whichever way you look at it a) this is a critical place to be and d) it may become more uncomfortable until it starts getting better.

Finn’s Metabolic Journey to Health and Happiness
The goal is to lose .5 kg per week over a 12 month period. This will result in a weight loss of 26 kgs and although we may reach some plateaus this weight loss target is based on average loss.
- Listen to and understand podcasts on hyperinsulinemia, ketogenic diet and healthy weight loss.
- Define metabolism and study what it is.
- Join the gym in November when we return to Melbourne.
- Start walking each day. Begin with 15 minutes, build up to 30 and then go for a target of 60 minutes.
- Stop snacking and eat 3 big meals a day that are high in fat and protein and very low in carbs. No eating in between meals. Go for satiation.
- Make certain that the electrolytes and salt are kept up.
- Do daily ketone and blood sugar tests.
- Work out what tests are needed and get them done.
Sunday October 15, 2023

I feel like I’ve been taken over by gremlins this morning. My oura ring tells me that I have had a great sleep so maybe it’s either electrolyte deficiency or the ice cream that we ate.
Saturday October 14, 2023

I don’t have a lot to say today. Georgie and I slept in until 7.30 which is late for me. I suppose I was still recovering from my big day back at the gym yesterday.
We went for a short walk this morning and dropped into Gary and Rosie’s house which worked out perfectly, spent about 2 hours there which was just the right amount of time.
We have eaten at Mendez and it’s now 1.45pm, Finn and I are heading off to Monkey Forest and then to the gym and sauna so well be gone until dark. Georgie is staying at the villa.
We found some land yesterday in Payogan up near the antique shop where I bought my big Chinese vase. 14 are. Almost perfect for what we need but it’s a bit out of our price range. There are solutions but we haven’t found one yet! We will continue to explore this and may end up getting 4 are to begin with. Georgie is waiting on the legal docs.
I’m back into doing my infra red shoes after a week of nothing in Bangkok, because I just couldn’t take the boots with me. Still taking my supplements.
Friday October 13, 2023

Reminder to self …. Where did the myth about Friday 13 generate from? I don’t know when I first hears about it, I know that it’s a suspicion and nothing else but I wonder what effect it has that so many people see it as a potential threat to their survival. How much does per perceived agreement have to do with creating a “reality”.
Here’s something that I found. Looks like its got to do with the new testament’s Last Supper story where there were 12 disciples plus Christ and Friday was the next day when he was crucified. Judas was said to be the last person to arrive (13). There’s also connections with the Norse gods and also the general significance of 12. 12 months, 12 star signs. 12 was also a significant number in my childhood, even 12×12=144 had some significance. A dozen. Asian hotels don’t have a 13th floor.
I got out of bed and hit the road at about 6.30am, my first walk in ages. The first thing that I was aware of was that my fit was had diminished and that my lungs had been somehow compromised by the flu that I had a few weeks ago. I’m obviously still not repaired so I will really need to do some research as to what happens in the lungs when you have a respiratory virus. It’s rather ironical that the major purpose of this trip was to get super fit, create more muscle and drop some fat and here I am more than 6 weeks into it in worse shape than when we arrived. The thing is that what is, is. I just need to face the facts and work from where I am right now. Rebuild, recreate, learn more.
What are the positives gained from our time in Bali? And Bangkok?
Most importantly I have established a much more substantial and real relationship with Finn as a young adult. We are possibly closer than we have been at any stage in his life. Whether I can be a positive influence on him is still questionable but I am closer than I was at the beginning of our trip so that’s a good thing. I’ve got things that I can learn from him as much as visa versa. The time that I have spent with Finn has had a slight impact on the Normal closeness that Georgie and I experience, got to work on that one. Going to Bangkok helped me to realise that we still have assets and communication lines that I have let become a bit stagnant. We have certain paintings that we can sell. More valuable than I had imagined. I broached this with Finn yesterday and he is keen to follow up. I’ll write a simple project to get the ball rolling on this. Another achievement was to return to Bangkok and confront the past. It was a better experience than I had expected seeing the artists at JJ. What stood out was our time with Kitti and Ty.
I am back at the villa now. I really didn’t want to walk but I did. Looks like I did 66 minutes and just under 8000 steps. I wasn’t my usual ball of energy but I made it through the walk.
Thursday October 12, 2023

We have been back in Bali for 2 nights. Yesterday was a strange sort of day for me. We went to the bank in the morning to finalise our company accounts, came back and had lunch with Finn at Murni’s and then I lay down on the couch and went to sleep. I suspect that I had an electrolyte deficiency going on which ended up in me feeling like I hadn’t slept in a week. I sipped salty water throughout the day and also took electrolytes. By 6 pm I had brightened up and ready to have dinner with Tom Dawson and his wife Natalie who are in Bali because Tom’s older brother died of a heart attack 2 weeks ago, he was 59. I haven’t seen Tom since just after Paul passed away. It was good catching up, sharing stories. We ate at Murni’s again and Tom was kind enough to pay. They came back to our villa after we ate and needed up staying until around 11 pm. A late night for me. Finn and I then stayed up until midnight talking.
I just said to Georgie that I had lost my mojo. The amount of “create” that you have to put into life to stay on top of it is huge but the dividends are also huge.
After having the flu for a couple of weeks, stopping walking in the mornings and generally bombing out physically I now have the formidable job of getting back on top of life and motivating myself to fill my body and mind with energy.
I didn’t walk or exercise today but I did have a sauna and cold plunge, about 90 minutes in all. Tonight I will endeavour to get to bed early and then wake up as the sun comes up and go for a decent walk.
There is a lesson to be learned in all of this. Familiarity and taking things for granted results in a certain level of complacency. As usual it is all about confronting what is there.
After returning from Bangkok and realising that some of our artists have gone out the roof in price I have rehabilitated my desire to upgrade the websites, good thing.

Tuesday October 10, 2023
Gary Collier here. I’m sitting on a plane flying from Bangkok back to our villa in Bali. I just watched your podcast with Trish and Tony Ortega. I really feel for you both. You’ve done the right thing sharing your story but unfortunately not too many of the “true believers” will have the courage or fortitude to watch it.
Firstly just so you feel a bit more comfortable I’m on the same side of the fence that you guys are on and have been since early 2012. I won’t go into that now but after all those decades in Scientology the cracks started happening for me and I started my own journey out of the bubble that I had helped create. After my son Paul passed away in early 2012 I realized that my family were far more important to me, as were my personal beliefs, doubts, integrity and viewpoints than all of the discordant “ beliefs” and cognitive dissonance and even the friendships that I had cultivated since getting into Scientology in 1975.
Ironically I met Jim in the spring of 1963. I had just moved from inner city Melbourne out to the deep suburbs and ended up at Bentleigh High School. Jim and another guy named Don Baird were the super tough guys in my year (year 7). I was a couple of years younger than Jim, a bit arty farty and into music and playing the guitar to be part of that peer group so I never got to really know him, apart from the fact that he was so tough that he rode a bicycle that had no brakes and he used his foot to put enough pressure on the back wheel to stop it. When I wandered into the Church in 1975 with my long hair and “ hippy drug case” in tow one of the first people I saw in the building was Jim. Holy shit, I almost ran out the door. I had been led to believe that Scientology was some sort of hippy philosophy in disguise and couldn’t work out what the hell one of the Conley boys was doing there.
Later on your brother Gary worked for me and Melanie for a while in our print business just before your family set of for America. I heard that he had an accident at Gold decades ago, I hope he’s OK.
My daughter Allissa (or Paul either) never got into Scientology. It’s funny, I always thought I was different than the others, that I wasn’t brain washed or forceful but talking to Allissa in minute detail about what it was like for her growing up in a Scientology family and going to Yarralinda disabused me of my naivety and blind spots.
One of my greatest pleasures in life is being a very lucky father and the amazing relationship that I have with Allissa and Finn, my 23 year old son and that I had with Paul. They are 2 of my closest friends and confidantes, we have no secrets and say what we think about each other openly. Absolutely nothing is important enough for me to foresake my kids. That is one of the reasons I am writing to you. I’d love to go and shake your parents by the shoulder and tell them that they are responsible for the horrible situation that your family has gotten into and all for a lost cause, a flimsy dream that never really had much substance and to be quite frank never delivered what it so adamantly promised. I’d love to wave a magic wand and sprinkle fairy dust on all Scientologists so that they might wake up and realize that their belief that they are “thinking for themselves” and special is a wet dream that Ron Hubbard hatched somewhere along the line.
Anyway, I wish you both well. Well done on pursuing your career as an artist. Georgie and I had a couple of Galleries in Melbourne for about 20 years, we still do a bit online but to be frank my goal now is to keep myself fit, healthy and open to new ideas so I can get out and explore the world, meet people, discover the beauty of our planet and have whatever adventures I can have each and every day.
I’m really happy with my life and my own beliefs which have become very fluid and will hopefully continue to evolve.
Good luck. I know that it is unlikely but you have my best wishes that Jim and Kaye will wake up and see that they are missing out on being part of an amazing family. I just hope that they (plus the Ceberanos) might one day (soon) have the strength and resolve to say ““Fuck Scientology” we can make our own decisions!”, the world won’t crumble and eternity will continue to exist for all of us.
Bangkok
Circle 31 : 7 Days in Bangkok
I had to return. I had to face the past. I hatched a plan back in 2007 that contained equal parts of desperation and salvation. Paul’s life was in tatters, ruined. He was living like a hermit, lonely, forlorn, hopelessness pervaded his life. He was lost, no future, no goals, no friends. The black hole that he was in had been pulling on me, trying to drag me in. I had no option but to be there for him, after all I was his father.
The fact that I didn’t sink into the quicksand is a testament to my resilience. It came close at times, I became a full blown alcoholic, the stress felt as if it had the power of an atomic bomb, I was running out of ideas.
Paul had lived in Bangkok for a couple of years in early 2002. We were living down near the Yarra River in Kew when 9/11 happened. Paul and his friend Mahesh had hatched a plan to visit Thailand just after . We had spent a few days in Bangkok together on the way to Europe in September 2000. The night before Paul was due to leave with Mahesh he had a diabetic hypo which resulted in him missing the plane and subsequently missing Mahesh who arrived on his own and ended up going to the islands. Paul left a few days later and arrived in Bangkok, solo. He gravitated toward the Nana area in Sukhumvit. This was 4 years after he had spent almost a year living in San Francisco on his own. The stress of him living with Type 1 diabetes had become a tacit part of our lives. There were countless times that Paul had hypos and hypers, this became a part of the reality of life. What I didn’t know back then was that this was constantly wearing down his body. Sounds dumb to me now but that’s the way it was back then when the future seemed far away.
The thing is that coming to Bangkok opened doors for Paul, he started to learn Thai, make friends and possible even enjoy life in his own crazy way. Bangkok gets in your blood, it intoxicates you, it is like a drug. Paul got hooked. What was meant to be a 2 week holiday turned into a 2 year stay in Bangkok. I finally talked him into coming back to Australia, maybe Melanie insisted, I can’t be certain. The thing is that he did return. This was possibly the most intense period. Dreams were shattered, the future became uncertain, nobody knew what was going to happen in the next 5 minutes. It’s like time was put into a blender and mixed up like a smoothly. I have no real idea of the time track during this period. Whenever I look into this few years it’s like a ball of string that has been unravelled and gotten all knotted up. Paul live with us at the warehouse in Clifton Hill, he lived above Graphic Impressions, he lived in 2 flats in Hawthorn, he lived above the shop in Rathdowne St. I lived in constant fear that he was going to die and that I would find his lifeless body after a hypo. I was in terror. No wonder I hit the booze. I even lived with him for a while above the shop in North Carlton. My life was in turmoil as was his. I was constantly looking for solutions where there were none to be found. I was so close to the craziness of the situation that I couldn’t see anything clearly. All I could think of was to solve the problems as they arose. Put out the fires as they began, waiting until the next one started. Somehow I continued to work, to keep my relationship going with Georgie. I could have been, should have been a better father to Finn. Life was tumultuous. Nothing could save me from the black pit that surrounded both his and my lives.
Monday October 9, 2023

I left my computer in Bali. For the last week my interest in writing has diminished significantly. It’s possible that I don’t like writing on my iPad. I can’t justify buying a new one so I’m just going to have to go with the flow and accept that there is probably nothing much to write about anyway. It’s the room, it’s the chair, the table, the air conditioning, the humidity outside the door, it’s Bangkok.
I’m sure I’ll get back to writing again in Bali. We got a message from Ocky this morning letting us know that the new law for investment visas in Bali means that you have to prove that you have around one million dollars in the bank in Bali.
Sunday October 8, 2023

Bangkok isn’t turning out like I expected but having said that I’m enjoying myself and the time I am spending in Bangkok.
The week is moving fast, too fast to get all of the things that I would like to get done out of the way. I just need to go with the flow and stop kidding myself.
We went via Skytrain and Ferry to Icon Siam, Bangkok’s newest shopping centre this morning. It’s huge but I still like Paragon better. We walked around and around, eating as we went. Finn and I discovered a jacket that looks ok on him, a green olive colour I bought it for him as a gift.
Saturday October 7, 2023
I may never come back to Bangkok again. After we head back to Bali next week I have no real reason to ever set foot in Bangkok again apart from visiting Wat Samianaree to show my respects to Paul. I have mixed feelings about being here this week, we aren’t really getting to see a real lot …. Backwards and forwards on the sky train and up and down in Grab cars. Soi 31 is a terrible place to stay, virtually no street food and a distinct lack of heart. The apartment is fine but as far as interaction with the street and Thai life there is very little.
We aren’t trying to break any records today. We walked down Soi 39 this morning to The Emporium and the new shopping centre across the road. It’s hard to believe that a bit over 10 years ago this place seemed rather exotic. It’s just a tired shopping centre now although there are cinemas there.
Hi Marty This is Gary. We have had to fly to Bangkok for a week (Oct 3-10) to organize our investment kitas. We also have to stay in Bali for an extra 10 days to wait for the visa to come through. Is it possible to freeze our memberships for one week (while we are in Bangkok) and add this week to the end of our current month which will take us to the end of this trip (Oct 30). Finn will return to Australia on Oct 20 so it is just for me and Georgie.
Friday October 6, 2023
Harking back to last night, we decided to walk to Ekamai. Georgie worked out a route through the back sois that run parallel with Sukhumvit so we didn’t have to go down to the sky train. The only issue was that when we finally arrived at Ekamai we didn’t know whether to turn left or right, we turned left which was quite possibly a wrong decision. I’m amazed that Georgie and Finn were so tolerant. After walking for hours we turned around and went back to a Japanese restaurant that we had walked past earlier. Dinner cost about $90, far too much. I have a horrible feeling that we are spending a bit too much money in Bangkok.
We caught a car back to Soi 31 hung around for a while, I went to the local 7/11 and bought a few ice creams. Another day was over.
Today I slept in until 7.30, I must say it felt good. Georgie and I went out just after 8 to get some coffees , we came back and the three of us got ready to head to Wat Samianaree, on the train. Our first stop was Paragon Food Hall, of course. So much food to choose from, traditional, western, baked, BBQed, deep fried, soup, cakes, yummy.
Thursday October 5, 2023
Inflation is like a slowly inflating balloon, it grows and grows until it bursts. Maybe it’s simply that I’m out of date or maybe it’s because I have become so used to Bali prices or maybe it’s just the way I used to think when I came to Bangkok to purchase art but it seems that Thailand has become far more expensive than it was back in the first part of the 21st century.
Bangkok is a huge city, jam packed with people and cars. I had forgotten what a Bangkok traffic jam was like, after 48 hours of arriving it has all flowed back into my consciousness, years of being stuck in the sois and main roads that are never ending, stretching for miles in every direction and all with the potential for a huge static traffic jam.
We have had a relatively disjointed day today beginning with a walk to the Sky Train and a journey along the Silom Sky Train line to Saphon Taksin on the Chao Praya River. We hopped on a river ferry and went upstream to River City to check out some of the new art galleries and antique shops. I’ve spent many hours looking around River City over the past 25 years. River City is sort of like a sliding door that happened by chance all that time ago. There’s something about Hindu and Buddhist religious artefacts and antiques that light up my heart. This appreciation for the Asian aesthetic is still strongly embedded in my appreciation of beautiful things. Having said that, all those years ago I fell for the bronze Chiparus copies of exquisite art deco statues that I bought into Australia to sell in our galleries or shops as we called them back then.
Enough meandering. We caught a Grab car from River City to the Paragon Food Hall where we ate an early lunch and a few treats as well. The food hall has become a place to congregate when we need a bit of food comfort. I’m not certain how long we stayed at Paragon, eventually we grabbed another Grab and hot footed it to Khaosan Road for old times sake. It seems to have lost its hippy vibe but is still essentially the same as it was when I first went there.
It’s almost 6.30pm now, we had a very slow trip in a car back from Khoasan Rd through more of Bangkok’s afternoon traffic jam disaster. It took what seemed like hours, probably was but I don’t really want to know.
Who knows where we will end up later tonight. Either the Middle Eastern area around Sukhumvit 1 or Ekamai in the opposite direction.
Wednesday October 4, 2023
I arrive in Bangkok yesterday afternoon for the first time in almost a decade. Almost 25 years since I first set foot in a Bangkok soi. The first thing that struck me when we walked out of Don Muang Airport, the old airport not the “new” one, was the humidity. It had the familiarity of years gone by, it still felt like a big wet Labrador sitting on my face. It has been dry in Bali, waiting for the rain but Bangkok had hit the jackpot. Torrential tropical rain coming down in bucket loads, flooding the streets and slowing the already busy and congested traffic. Motor scooters fallen on their sides and floating in water half way up to the knee. I initially thought that we were going to have a smooth run to Asok, our apartment is in Soi 31, a rather upmarket area full of fancy towers chocked up with condos. It took us 2 hours or even longer to snake our way under the cement columns that hold up the tollways through a concrete jungle that seems so alien after having spent 5 weeks in our simple village of Penestanan. Bangkok reminds you that you live on a densely populated planet, full of people striving to survive and stay alive.
Our plane arrived at 3.30 pm, the plan was to drive to the apartment, change and catch the skytrain to Siam Paragon. What we didn’t know was that as we sat waiting at the airport a young 14 year old boy who is on psychiatric medication was running amok through the shops shooting people dead and critically injuring them. They say that he didn’t take his medication that day. His life has now been catapulted to some new horrible reality where he will have to deal with his actions for the decades to come. Ruined, like the lives of the family of the person who he shot dead and those of the others who he critically injured. Needless to say we didn’t go to Paragon last night. We wandered out of our apartment into the drenched and waterlogged soi and beelined into the relatively expensive looking Italian restaurant right across the road from our condo, this seemed to be the easy way out as it was raining and we were hungry after a day of travel with almost no food. After the Bali prices that we are so used to we were having trouble coming to grips with what seemed like exorbitant prices in this Italian restaurant. We ended up in a Hokkaido style Japanese restaurant right around the corner where we found food that was unusual, tasty and medium priced.
Finn’s big goal was to find a marijuana dispensary, he wasn’t let down as there was one a few hundred metres from our abode, appropriately named High and Dry. We purchased two joints and headed back to our air conditioned apartment that is quite nice by the way. A bit soulless but it matched the pictures in the AirBnB listing and apart from the artificial books placed on the shelves it will serve its purpose well.
I feel like I’m back in Bangkok. The memories of being here with Paul are not too abrasive. I’ll have to see how that pans out over the days ahead.
The news of the shooting has spread around the world but heart of Bangkok just keeps beating at its normal pace and all will be forgotten by noon.
My biggest task now will be to get Georgie and Finn out of the apartment to head off to explore Bangkok.
OK, it’s just after 9 am and we are ready to go.
We set off for Siam Paragon. After walking for about one kilometre I suddenly realized that I didn’t have my phone so I promptly turned around and beelined it back the way we had already walked, Finn and Georgie followed slowly behind. At some point in my slight panic I realized that I had more than likely left my phone in the apartment. Yep, that’s exactly what did happen. We decided to grab a GRAB instead of the Sky Train. The app told me that it would cost 200 bht, problem is that when we arrived and I gave the driver 200 bht he showed me his app which said 365. Now that would normally be OK but the problem was that I had
no more cash so I had to leave Georgie and Finn and head off in search of an ATM, that wasn’t too hard. The notes came out in 1000’s, I didn’t think! The driver had already told me that he had no change and here I was bringing him 1000 bht when he only needed 100! So even more of a pain in the arse I had to break 1000 bht, do you think that was easy? No way, I roamed around looking for something that I could buy only to find out that almost no one had any change. I finally found a neat little note pad and achieved my goal. “Here’s your money”. That took at least ½ hour but we were all still in fine spirits so it didn’t end up mattering.
We made our way into the scene of the crime from the night before and went down to the food court. OMG … so much choice, so diverse, eceletic and so many eye watering munchables. Yum … that’s all I’m going to say.
I’m leaving a big gap, we are back in the apartment, it’s 7pm, we’ve eaten our dinner which was bloody delicious as it should when you have just had your first Bangkok edible. Some would call it the munchies. I haven’t done too bad with the munchies so far apart from my dinner which was shrimp cake and cabbage, a small slice of pizza which was the straw that broke the camels back and 2 strange and delicious ice cream things which I pretend aren’t unhealthy. Every mouthful was like a gift from heaven. The fact that everything tastes so delicious when you are stoned is somewhat of a setback. The constant, instant gratification of eating and tasting titillates your taste buds and fools your body into pretending that it isn’t chock full of food and even that it wants more. I’m having a battle with myself in regard to eating even more, not for nourishment but just straight out greed. Will I, won’t I?
Tuesday October 3, 2023
Today marks a brand new experience in regard to our life in Bali. This is first time in decades that we have set out from Bali to another Asian destination. We flew to Jogja in the 1980s and caught a bus there in 1997 but this is a new experience heading off to Bangkok.
After our horror trip back from Uluwatu in peak hour traffic last night we didn’t get to bed until maybe 10.30 pm. The latest bedtime I’ve had since arriving in Bali this trip. I kept waking up all night with horrible cramps from all of the sweating yesterday, my salt supplies were depleted horribly and I had to walk around the room to bring some relief to the sharp, nagging pains that wracked my ankles and lower legs.
The one thing I forgot to ask Georgie and Finn last night was what time to wake them up this morning. That was a bit of an oversize. I’ll drink my coffee and wake them probably at 6.30.
We still haven’t got a booking for our time in bangkok. Miracles do and have happened so I’m still optimistic. The money from a booking would come in so handy, even if it just covers the costs of the trip, accomodation and some of the living expenses.
There is no value in trying to make this happen too much, being too forceful won’t work.
I rang Joey Llatse on our way back from Uluwatu last night. We had a great talk, John and Flora are in Barcelona for the next week or so and Joey is acting as their “stable datum” in that wonderful and beautiful city that I love so much. My memories of earlier this year are still fresh and vibrant.
I’m thinking that I should get a move on but overall I’m pretty certain that most of the work/packing is done and even if there is stuff that we don’t get done Purnami can hide the “debris” that we leave.
I hardly coughed last night apart from a few moments of getting the last remnants of the phlegm up and out. Thank god this bloody flu is behind me now. A lesson? Even a relatively strong and vibrant immune system isn’t going to help against a virus that is tricky and potent.
Sounds like Finn is up out of bed and poring a bath, it’s only Georgie that I have to wake from her slumber now.
I won’t look at my sleep stats for now, I can’t imagine that they will be substantial, doesn’t matter. I can make up for it over the next few days.
Bangkok is full of marijuana dispensaries now after it was legalised mid last year. Finn is obviously excited and I am full of trepidation pretending that I want to “observe” whether it will help my neuropathy. When I tried it four years ago I got some huge munchy reactions and ate so much that I almost got sick.
After having said all of that and bitched about cramps and shitty sleep I feel pretty good this morning and I have to admit that I am excited about our adventure to bangkok that we are about to embark upon. No more roosters crowing for a week, no more zero air conditioning. The City of Angels awaits.
Monday October 2, 2023
I’m up and ready to head down to Uluwatu, Georgie and Finn are still lost in their dreams from which I am going to rudely awaken them in about 15 minutes.
Yesterday was a relatively nondescript day ….. haircuts, meals, sauna, drive to Kedewatan, late night. Finn was in fine form.
We have a day of saunaing, sweating and cold plunge to look forward to at The Istana. I finally got all the bookings done and paid for last night.
Then tomorrow it’s off to Bangkok! To face my past.
I don’t have a lot to say this morning apart from an incantation to entice somebody to rent Villa Tusk for the 7 days that we will be in Bangkok. Unfortunately it’s not looking good at the moment but I’m still clinging to a magical cord of hope that it happens.
Funny thought for the day. Before we left Melbourne to come to Bangkok I was in a funny place, nervous, wondering what I hadn’t done … but then we arrived in bali and I haven’t thought about it again. Now I’m starting to have that same anxiety about leaving bali to return to Melbourne. I should simply take this as a sign that we are now genuinely living half way between houses.
I’m pretty much over the virus. The urge to cough is almost gone, although not 100%. I’m so looking forward to the next 4 weeks of rebuilding my energy and strength. Big walks around Bangkok, getting lost in forgotten sois, discovering delicious street food.
Our day at The Istana has been a huge success. Five hours of sauna and cold plunge over a seven hour period has cleansed me of any superficial toxicity that may have permeated my body. I feel cleansed and purified. The day is almost over, the saunas and cold plunge are about to close to have a brief situs before the last session begins in about 30 minutes. The general consensus is that we will find a car and head back to Ubud without lingering in Uluwatu, eating dinner and generally wasting time. We still have a certain amount of preparation to attend to before out flight to Bangkok tomorrow at noon. Made will pick us up at 8 am. I’ve said it heaps of times now but I still have hope that we will get a booking for the duration of our time in Bangkok. Fingers and toes are crossed. We’ve spent $300 today but overall I’m happy with the return on investment. We have experienced extremes of heat and cold, had fleeting discussions with people from all around the world, wise and foolish both, pseudo intellectuals and experienced travellers alike. Male and Female.
Sunday October 1, 2023
September has departed like a whisp of smoke gently blown away by the wind. In some ways it was a lost month and in others it was otherworldly, full of stillness, coughing up gooey phlegm and a lack of my normal energy. The virus is abating although it still has a hold on my body, cranking up my immune system to fight against the last enemy that are still attempting to fight on.
Today will be a day of preparation. We hear of to Bangkok in 2 days for an adventure that will unfold over 7 days. We have to prepare the villa in anticipation of a guest renting it for a week while we are away. I need to brew some magic potions to create some enchantment and necromancy that will result in a 7 day booking. All we need is 2 couples who are making a last minute booking in Ubud which will give us a much needed $3000 toward our stay in Bangkok. The plan is to possibly look at some land this morning, pack a small suitcase of clothing, put away our vitamins and balance of our clothing and other bits and pieces, get a haircut, shave and go to the gym and sauna. Tomorrow we will set off early for Uluwatu and the Istana.
We pulled off a very pleasant lunch yesterday with our expat Australian friends Jeffrey, Michael and Georgie’s childhood friend Stewey. As usual I didn’t drink, but the others made up for me. Purnami collected food from all around Penestanan which came together beautifully as a Balinese feast. One of the wonderful qualities of gay men is that they are very validative and acknowledge beauty and unique individual qualities. Finn received a huge acknowledgment for the quality of his voice which may be one of his greatest hidden assets. We also got a huge boost in our confidence and egos for what we have accomplished at Villa Tusk.
Komang has almost completed tiling the bathroom which will add a huge magic sprinkle of eclectic aesthetics to the villa. The next stage will be the bale and a bit of painting individual pieces of furniture.
Finn has 20 days left in Asia before he returns to Australia, we have 31.
I’m out and about this morning. Back out treading the pavement albeit not with the same enthusiasm and energy that I generally have. This is my coffee stop.
Hi Rachel How good to hear from you. We have been back in Bali since September 22. The frogs have stopped serenading us in the middle of the night and the skies are blue, waiting in anticipation for the monsoon which will undoubtedly miss the bus and arrive late this year due to El Niño. Having said that the weather is far gentler at this time of the year. The magic is still here, the gods seem adequately content, the sun rises at 6 and sets again 12 hours later. We are heading down to Uluwatu tomorrow for a day at the Istana and then hopping on a plane to Bangkok on Tuesday to spend 7 days in the city of angels. We are currently setting up a company in Bali and organising investment visas hence the trip out of Bali. It is also time for me to confront my memories of Bangkok in regard to my son Paul who passed away there almost 12 years ago. We will visit the Wat where we did his funeral ceremonies and where he was cremated. It is a bit daunting but I’m quite confident that I can find more positives than negatives while we are there (in Bangkok), then back to Bali until October 31. Ubud Writers Festival is starting on October 18.

Maybe there is something to be learned from this past few weeks of being ill. Life throws different curves at you, it is important to be able to react appropriately to whatever comes your way without any remorse or feeling of guilt. I had planned a trip full of action, exercise and potential relationships but alas, getting the flu close the the beginning closed a door on all of that and forced me into a situation where I had only one option and that was to adapt to a relatively sedentary life, spending more time at the villa and doing very little apart from a bit of writing. Instead of throwing myself out of bed at 6 am and rushing up the Tjampuan Ridge I have crawled out of bed at 7am and staggered around to Alchemy for my morning coffee and writing session which is at the other end of the spectrum but it’s not the end of the world. I am alive, I am happy, I am relatively carefree and I am enjoying being alive. Somewhere along the way I must have made a decision that everyday needed to be filled with accomplishment, discovery, attaining goals, chasing pleasure. Isn’t what I have what most people want? When life’s passage is constantly smooth maybe one needs a few snags along the way in order to have something to compare it to, to contrast it with.
I don’t think much about death anymore, I think about staying alive. The way I care for my body is not perfect but it’s pretty good. If I had continued along the trajectory that I had travelled along for the first 16 or so years of the 21st century I may have been dead by now and as such would have missed all of this treasured experience and gratitude that I now seem to take for granted. Maybe I need to explore that aspect of life a bit more : gratitude and appreciation for what I have instead of just taking it for granted as my god given right. How does one savour every moment without distracting himself from the pure experience of just simply existing and appreciating whatever exists or whatever one creates. I suppose that in itself is the answer. “Whatever one creates.” It doesn’t have to be a garden of Eden, but at the same time it could be. Just the simple act of looking around at the universe that you have created and observing it is a powerful act. The physical universe exists when you are there or not but it only exists for you when you are creating it. It’s a bit like a VR game. Put on the headset and become an observer or a participant, whichever works for you at any point in time. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to get bored or stop appreciating what potential exists in either role.
After having spent a good part of my life following the principles of L Ron Hubbard I finally made the decision in 2012, when I was 60, to extract myself from the bubble which I had willingly allowed to encase me for decades. I now rely on myself to reach my own conclusions and to listen to whoever or whatever I choose. This is working for me beautifully, I am very happy with my life and existence but that’s another story altogether.
There are myriad ideas and tools that exist, the availability of information in this current day and age is immense. All I have to do is sift through them and choose what works for me. Something I keep from my Scientology days is a simple scale developed by Hubbard called “The Havingness Scale”. It is simple and powerful.
Create
Responsible for (willing to control)
Contribute to
Confront
Have
Waste
Substitute
Waste substitute
Had
Must be confronted
Must be contributed to
Created
I found myself in 2019 in a challenging situation. I was 67, overweight, pre-diabetic, addicted to alcohol, high blood pressure, fatty liver, metabolic syndrome. I stopped looking at myself in the mirror because I couldn’t confront what looked back at me. It certainly wasn’t a narcissus moment. I wasn’t the only one in this situation but I am the only version of “me” and the time had come to face up to the facts.
If you look up at that chart above I was stuck around “must be confronted”. What do I mean by this? Well, the facts were stacked against me and I simply had to face up to the simple reality that I was “out of control” in regard to my own physical well being and that if I didn’t “confront” what I had allowed to happen I was probably going to drown in a sea of self loathing and bad health.
Before I go on I need to give you the good news. That bad shit is all behind me now. I am fit, healthy, my proper weight and most of the time I am in a condition of “Creation” as regards my body which I regard as my vehicle that carries me through this journey called life.
Right in the middle of the chart there is the word “have”. You know, I have a car, I have a house, I have a body, I have a wife. It’s so easy to waste these things and go down the slippery slope of letting them fall into a state of disrepair and giving up any responsibility for the condition they are in. This is the negative end of the scale, we’ve all been there with something in our lives and if we are honest with ourselves we’ve all pretended that we weren’t responsible for the outcome. I’ll leave this for another day but when I say I was at “must be confronted” I simply mean that I finally realized that I was fucked if I didn’t do something to turn things around.
So there I was. Early 2019. I have a body that is in bad shape. I’d better face up to the facts and start confronting it. It’s so easy to confuse your consciousness and your body. “I feel great, I’m not old blah blah blah” however when you start examining and diagnosing the flesh, bones and whatever muscle is left, the condition that it is in, it’s a bit like realising that your house is falling down around you. All of a sudden you can see all the work you have to do and this can be overwhelming, nonetheless I had to get through this and recognise that I had to change the trajectory.
So here I was, in a position where I realized and was willing to “contribute to” my poor old body. I started doing research, learning a bit more about what was happening and why, what I could do to start moving in a more positive direction. I changed my eating habits, I stopped drinking, I started exercising. I had to have a huge amount of self discipline at this stage. I was a long long way from where I wanted to be. Lucky for me, my wife Georgie was in the same head space which made everything at least 50% easier.
By doing these simple actions I was beginning to “take responsibility for” my body and started feeling that I was in control, albeit with a long way to go.
It has been a long journey from “must be confronted” to “create”. The benefits have been immense. As I said, all of those negative conditions are a thing of the past and I have garnered enough self discipline to constantly work at creating this body of mine so it can carry me through the decades ahead. A reliable vehicle that needs and deserves all of the love, care and maintenance that I can throw at it.

I had a waterfall of intense and lucid dreams intermingled with coughing last night. I’m pretty certain that the dreams were precipitated by simple things that needed my attention. It’s an old pattern that I have which has something to do with dumping responsibility onto another person in an attempt to get myself out of trouble.
I just jumped across to my emails and handled a few things which might take some of this imaginary mental pressure off me. In actual fact it feels quite physical, pretty certain that I have flooded my body with cortisol this morning and then off course there are the effects of the antibiotics.
There are lessons to be learned.
Ironically I had over 2 hours of deep sleep last night plus a heap of other great metrics.
I am back at the villa now after my short walk this morning. My nose has started to run again. The coughing fits create a certain light headedness which is alien and uncomfortable, not a feeling that I look forward to. My energy level is at about 50% of what it normally is.
Today we will go to the bank and fix up our accounts and also get the ball rolling on our company accounts. The land that we looked at yesterday in Kedewatan was great but the access was terrible insofar as we would have to put in a whole lot of infrastructure to even get the building supplies and guests to the site.
Once again the day is over. There is a new moon tonight but I haven’t seen it yet. Lis said that it was huge and wonderful in Melbourne.
We got our banking sorted out at Danamon today, bloody boring but it had to be done and we got the ball rolling with our company account. We had lunch at Bali Buda, nothing to write home about but OK nonetheless. Later on the 3 of us went to the sauna at Parq and finished off with a great dinner downstairs at Murni’s near the Tjampuan Bridge. I picked up some coconut milk on the way home and once again it’s almost 8pm and time for bed.
Anyway here’s a response to Flora
Hi Flora Imagine if we could get into a Time Machine and take ourselves back 50 years to our younger selves. I wonder if we could have imagined that we would be travelling the world in 2023, I wonder if we could have even conceived 2023! We’ve made a pretty good life for ourselves haven’t we. Going out and experiencing the beauty and diversity of the planet and the people living on it. We must have done something right along the way even to follow those abstract adventurous postulates that we had back then. I’m so happy for you and John having all that beauty and adventure.
Enjoy Barcelona and Spain. I pretty certain that you will adore it. Give my love to Joe when you see him.
Hi Brenda
I am so pleased to hear that Mark is doing HBOT and also that he is starting his IVs next week. That’s huge! Did he get the CTC results back from Greece yet? You wouldn’t believe what a win it is to hear that you guys are doing so much, I’ve tried to help so many people but they just haven’t got the full extent of the big job that you have to keep yourself alive and healthy. You and Mark are making it all worth while. I’m sure the results will be super positive. I’m also very pleased to hear that Mark is listening to Thomas Seyfried. His research really helped me get my head around what was going on and what I needed to do. Once again, let Mark know that I am always here if he wants to discuss his journey/ treatment with anyone.
It’s funny what life throws at us sometimes Brenda. The positive is that stuff like this makes us stronger and more resilient. I grew so much as a person/spiritual being over the past 4 years. It was almost like I personally needed something to come along that would force me to apply discipline to my life. We are all so different and respond in our own ways but I am certain that there will be a silver lining for you somewhere in all of this. Gary

Even though my sleep stats were pretty good last night and I slept in until 7 am I made a snap decision to wander around to Alchemy this morning in favour of going on a walk. I can make it up later at the gym. My body was telling me something and I listened.
We all went to Kemalan for dinner last night to mix it up a bit. The general concensus was that it was straight forward and good food and overall a decent experience. It’s only 3 weeks until Finn goes home which makes me a bit nervous. By the time I get back we’ll have 10 weeks to get some action happening. I can’t allow 2 steps forward and 2 steps back anymore, we’ve got to use the forward motion and traction that we’ve gained to go in a positive direction.
I coughed enough last night to wear myself out a bit plus I ended up with a headache this morning. Whatever this flu has done just keeps on going although I’m so much closer to being at the end than the middle. It’s simply that the body still keeps on creating mucous that needs to be coughed up.
We will visit the land in Kediwatan today as well as go to the bank to sort out our card problems.
I’m reading a book called Island of Bali, actually I was reading it in February/March and have just picked it up again. It is by Miguel Covarrubias. The amazing thing is that it was first published in 1937. There is a very elegant description of religions in the section entitled “Rites and Festivals”.
“ Religions were born of man’s desire to understand and control the mysterious process of nature. Fear of the eerie, unseen forces that cause birth, reproduction and death, awe before the power of fire, wind and water, made him worship the elements of the teeming world in which he lived. Only by the existence of physic forces and powerful spirits could he explain the perpetual motion of the sun and the moon, the roll of the sea, and the movement of the clouds, the wind that shakes the trees, lightning, thunder and rain. Health, fertility and success he attributed to his magic harmony with these forces, while for earthquakes, volcanic disturbances, epidemics, and the loss of crops he blamed the anger of spirits whom he failed to propitiate.
Eager to place his fate in the hands of superior beings who would take care of his needs and on whom he could place the responsibility for his failures, man created a pantheon of supernatural beings – protective gods and adverse evil spirits – whose goodwill he aimed to gain by rights, offerings and sacrifices. Unconsciously, by elaboration and by the adoption of new elements into the pantheon, he ended by developing an elaborate system of ritual and magic acts. Thus the primitive Balinese made their island a magic world populated by gods, human beings and demons, each occupying a level allotted by rank : the deified spirits of their ancestors dwelling in the summits of the volcanoes that form the island; ordinary human beings living in the middle world. The land that lies between the mountain tops and the sea, which is the home of devils and fanged giants, the enemies of mankind.
Placed between these two poles from which emanate opposing forces (the positive from the mountains and the negative from the underworld), the entire life of the calm and sensitive Balinese – their daily routine, social organization, their ethics, manners, art; on short, the total culture of the island – is folded by a system of traditional rules subordinated to religious beliefs. By this system they regulate every act of their lives so that it shall be in harmony with the natural forces, which they divide eternally into pairs : male and female- the creative principle; right and left; high and low; – the principles of place, direction, and rank; strong and weak, or healthy and sick, clean and unclean; sacred and powerful or unholy and dangerous; in general: Good and Evil, Life and Death.”
I get a bit jealous when I read somebody else’s words that portray such a complex reality in so few words and concepts. Covarrubias has been able to sum up Bali in this concise statement and it really works for me. We all create the realities that we need and want. Based on agreement, correlation and discipline the beliefs take on a life of their own that become relevant to the existence of a group of people. Invisible ties that hold everything together in some sort of harmony and balance.
I feel that I live in that middle ground between the mountains and the sea. Neither right or wrong, old or young, wise or unwise ….. I look forward to exploring new ideas, meeting new people, sharing ideas – whether agreed upon or not. The chaos of the mob, group think, fear to express one’s own viewpoints and ideas reigns supreme in the world in the early 2020s. It is a dangerous time for mankind, a big patch of quicksand cast in our way as we move forward into ever changing realities and agreements. I’ve spent my whole life embracing spontaneity and chaos but in recent times I’ve begun to appreciate the desire to conserve certain processes, traditions, beliefs and have, maybe for the first time, become aware that conservatism isn’t necessarily a bad thing to embrace. Not in regard to everything. Bali is a very good example. My love for Bali stems from the Balinese people’s need to conserve their traditions. Not everything has to keep changing. It is OK for some things to stay the same.

The day has almost run it’s course. I jumped/crawled out of bed at 6.30 with a god Almighty cramp in my foot. Obviously not enough electrolytes and salt. Apart from the cough and phlegm regurgitating from my lungs I’m feeling heaps better. I did another morning walk this morning and went to the gym and sauna in the afternoon after I had a massage. Apart from the tingle in my throat I feel great again. I’m pretty confident that the flu has run its course. Thank god. Poor Georgie is still on the home run.
I had set it up to look at the land in Kedewatan today but Made had to cancel, we’ll check it out tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
I got a great response from the American girl who contacted me today. I’ll send her some cancer stuff but don’t think that much will come of it. It would be nice to think that she reads my blog and has a realisation or 2. You can’t save the world or even a single person without them really wanting your help.
Hi Renee Thank you for getting in touch. I’ve done the test 3 times now. The first time to get an overall picture on what was happening in my body and to have a baseline to give me something to work with and the other 2 tests were to check on how my progress was coming along. I wasn’t in a “healthy” financial position when I was diagnosed with cancer and I sure as hell knew virtually zero about the characteristics of cancer. To be frank I was lost in a ball of confusion and uncertainty. As I slowly dug myself out of this black pit I realized that I was going to have to become the leader in a battle against an enemy that I knew little about but was determined to do whatever I needed to do to gain an understanding of “my enemy” and then to enlist the help I needed to further understand and combat it.
I became a firm believer in testing, metrics and using the data that I came up with to tweak my protocols and daily actions.
Dr Peter Eng suggested I do the RGCC test. To be honest the first time I did it was a leap of faith, I didn’t do a great deal of research on it and I didn’t really understand the results. But I am 100% happy that I did the test. Since then I have watched YouTube clips and gained a greater understanding of what the test is all about. I hadn’t even really got my head around circulating tumour cells or the potential of cancer to metasticize but as time went on I also became aware that my battle with cancer was going to be a lifelong activity even when I was given the all clear and that my awareness of where my circulating tumour cells are at is crucial to my overall well being.
To be honest the initial test was more of a psychological thing for me. I had put a great deal of trust in Dr Peter Eng and had made a decision to do what he said until I got my own education underway. Peter did not do an in depth interpretation of the test results, he mainly seemed to be interested in the % of CTC. I didn’t need to have chemo so in my case these results weren’t all that relevant but I assure you If I did ever need chemo I would use these test results as “my bible”. Looking back I did try to understand the test results, I spoke to a guy at the lab who made a pretty good effort to explain what it all meant and I found data from the lab in Greece but at this stage I wasn’t even at square one on my understanding of metabolism, cancer proliferation and a million other things that I learned along the way. I can’t tell you how relieved I was after my first round of treatments when I did another test to find out that my CTCs had decreased.
From my understanding the test can guide you on what sort of chemo is going to help with your body, your cancer and this is invaluable.
One of the things that I had to confront when I chose to treat my cancer as non- toxically as possible was that it was going to be a financial burden but I treasured life so much that I decided to cast my faith to the wind. I did this and little miracles happened along the way. I will always apply the discipline that I learned during my experience with cancer in my day to day life. I am healthier now than when I was diagnosed, I continued with more IVs and still do HBOT. I found that one of my most powerful tools was a very strict therapeutic ketogenic diet and-daily blood testing of blood glucose and ketones. Overall my approach to defeating my cancer was to adopt as many workable protocols as I could possibly do each day.
I am well aware that I am at a different stage of life than you are. I’m 71 but still wake up every morning feeling gratitude and excitement about the adventures I can have that day. I made my cancer treatments my number 1 priority. It was like having 2 full time jobs. I also felt a huge responsibility to beat the cancer for my kids. My daughter is 42 and my son is 23. I didn’t want to give up and die on them. I learned so much on my journey and continue to apply all that knowledge every day in my life. I have a constant awareness and respect for cancer and realize that it is up to me to stay healthy and fit so my body can fight against any of those little CTCs floating around in my body.
To sum it up. Yes, I am glad that I did the test and also that I did follow up tests. If nothing else I can see my progress and the amount of mental relief this gives me in huge. I do believe that if you need chemo the test will be invaluable. I think that it is crucial to know where your CTCs are at. It’s like going to war with an understanding of your enemy as opposed to blindly slashing out. BTW I ended up
opting for radiation but I had absolutely no side effects because I prepared my body for it with HBOT, IVs, diet, exercise, journaling, saunas and cold
Plunges and a myriad of other things which I’ve written about on my blog. The mainstream oncologists wanted to operate and cut out a whole lot of lymph nodes. I am so glad I didn’t do this. I’m a firm believer that mindset and miracles with heaps of study and hard work thrown in produce miraculous results. I am more than happy to talk to you. I am currently in Bali until the end of October with my wife and son, we have a house in Ubud. My WhatsApp number is +61425774415. I love helping when I can. Regards Gary
PS where are you located? Who is your doctor? What sort of cancer do you have and what stage is it? Where are you planning to do your HBOT?
Tuesday September 26, 2023
I woke up at 6 am this morning and apart from still having a cough I actually felt ready to return to the land of the living. I also decided that it was time to start walking again so I’m back in Penestanan Kaja this morning sitting at Schwarberger Coffee Shop tapping away on my iPhone with the sound of excited children filling the air as they wait to begin their Tuesday at school. When I walked up my gang this morning the only signs of life were Gustis’s dogs, then more dogs until I finally spotted a single girl alighting her scooter. I’d forgotten how nice it was to roam around Penestanan in the early morning with a cool breeze and relative silence.
I got in contact with our AirBnB host in. Angkor last night and set up our arrival in 8 days. I’m quite excited about returning toBangkok and the ghosts of the past. I am personally in a much better place now so I’m expecting to get a new slant on the city. I have to admit thatI am a bit nervous about running into the artists again but all I need to do is apply my positiveness and remember that I am no longer an art dealer. That era of my life is now behind me. It’s finished. All of the lost opportunities are blowing in the wind.
I’m quite happy with how things are going. We still have money and we are also taking actions to set ourselves up for a comfortable future. The most important thing for me is to keep on top of my health and to never become complacent. Nothing stays the same in this physical universe that we inhabit.
Even though Finn isn’t necessarily finding any new friends this current trip to Bali may be a watershed for him. There are distinct signs that he wants to change and that he is willing to put in the effort.
I’m almost at the end of my walk. It was quite fortitious this morning. I met a man named Made at the antique shop who claims to have land on the Agung River up the northern end of Kedewatan. He was waiting in the antique shop for the owner, Dewa to arrive and kindly called him to tell him that I was there waiting. I finally got to meet him and got a few prices on the pots, chairs and a few other artifacts that I have been coveting over the past month. I also got to listen to some of Kanye West’s music for the first time and was impressed. Then I listened to Douglas Murray talk about his book “The Madness of Crowds”, I have a feeling that Finn might find a soulmate if he starts listening to Murray.
The day is almost over again, we go to bed so early … I sometimes wake up at 11.30 pm and think it’s morning! I had a good day. I went to our new barbershop and got a facial and haircut and then walked to ParQ. I got in 16,000 steps today, a big breakthrough that is even more significant because it signifies that I’m almost over the effects of the flu. My Oura ring told me that my readiness was 85 today which is also a fabulous indicator. If I could only sleep throughout the night I’d be so damn happy but this isn’t looking good. I’m in bed for 10 hours to get 7 hours sleep.
Finn listened to the Douglas Murray interview that I sent him and like it a lot. I’m so pleased about this because Murray is articulate but more importantly he’s smart and on the same page as Finn.
Review of Element
Element has such a prominent position in the main street of Penestanan. The restaurant is totally slanted at tourists but after our experience tonight we got so many “Sorry I don’t understand/speak English” that I wonder why the proprietors hire poor innocent Balinese girls who don’t speak English. We had several challenging moments doing our orders and at one point it got a bit embarrassing. After we did order we were presented with a plate of Bruschetta when what we ordered was tomato soup. We used to go there a bit before Covid and it was pretty good albeit a bit pricey. We went again after the restaurant re-opened after Covid and my wife decided not to go any more but tonight I talked the family into giving it another go. Out of all the restaurants in Penestanan this one is by far the most expensive from our experience. The food quality is average, service is challenging and I even got charged 3,000 rupiah (not a lot) for a glass of plain water which doesn’t happen anywhere else in Penestanan. Unfortunately that’s our last meal at Element. If it was just the food I would have shut up but the problems created by the poor girls who served us not speaking English made it an unpleasant experience.
Addendum to Richard re Made
Hi Richard In regard to Made and driving. I spoke to Purnami yesterday and she has an idea that may work better. The road to understanding Balinese culture is never ending. One of the most important foundational truths is that family, temple and Banjar ( village council) ALWAYS take precedent over anything else. It’s something that I am Learning more and more about and also one of the things that makes me love Bali so much. Us westerners are so caught up in the struggle to do well, to get on in life, to make more money that we sometimes tend to overlook what is really important about being alive. This is reflected in the Balinese people’s daily gratitude to the gods, the offerings and ceremonies that hold so much import. Purnami wisely pointed out to me that there are times when Made may be called upon to perform duties for the Banjar, he is a musician in the Gamelan orchestra, or maybe there will be a special ceremonial day, or maybe an extended family member or somebody in the village may die. What she has suggested is that you and her co-0rdinate your driving needs each day in advance. You can discuss with her what you have planned and she will then set it up for you. This means that there may be days when you don’t need Made or where he has other responsibilities and cannot drive. You obviously won’t be paying for the days when you don’t use Made. Purnami will be at the villa everyday to clean up, make the beds and generally keep the place in order for you. You can also discuss with her when you want her to prepare breakfast, this is something she does separately from her job with us … you can organise this with her as needed. Same with massages. Just let her know what you want and when you want it and she’ll set it up.
Proposal To Komang
Hello Komang We have an idea that we would like you to think about. Nyoman who looks after our pool and garden has a full time job. It is difficult for him to come to Villa Tusk to look after pool. We need somebody to clean pool and do some gardening on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for one hour when you can fit in. Is this something you would be interested in? We could pay you an extra 100,000 rupiah each week if you are interested to do. If you cannot we understand. We just want to ask you first before somebody else.
…… Komang said yes to the proposal.
Monday September 25, 2023
There was always something about the end of September after the kids birthdays were done and dusted. It almost felt like the start of my private new year. There’s still a residual feeling lingering. Spring rain, suburban runs, whether life was innocent or not is another story.
I really need to put all my attention on the positives of life at the moment. This horrible, nasty flu that we have just hangs on like a rabid dog. I was feeling optimistic last night that I would wake up feeling great this morning but that didn’t happen, did it! I coughed so much that my lungs feel like they’ve done a marathon and my sinuses feel like Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia when it fills up.
The thing is that overall, life is great. I just have a problem that I’m wasting time and missing opportunities however getting well is the priority because that is what my overall mission is. Making myself healthier and stronger to battle the ravages of life as I get older. So far so good. I’ve come around to Alchemy this morning to write and drink coffee, it’s nice to be surrounded by people and music, movement and life in general.
Our next Villa Tusk guest Richard got back to me last night and has agreed that having Made as his permanent driver in Ubud will be a good thing. I’ve got to create some sort of agreement that will work for both the guest and Made.
Georgie has just sent me a message that we should go to the doctor in Penestanan which I am starting to think is a good idea.
I’d love to get back to the gym and get back on track with my fitness regime but this won’t really be a good idea until we improve a bit more. Maybe a sauna will suffice today. Got to keep the ball rolling with Finn, he’s doing so well overall. I am so glad that he has decided to stay for the whole 2 months with us. From his feedback he is well aware that Bali is a better option for the lifestyle that he likes to live. It has been amazing having long conversations, eating together, spending so much more time together than at home. I feel that I’m really getting to know him in a deeper way, peeling the onion.
Apart from going to the doctor this morning I’d like to spend time today doing planning with Georgie and discussing our potential projects, putting a bit of a time line to them.
Hi Richard
I don’t know what you and your family like eating but there are 2 great vegan restaurants with 5 minutes of Villa Tusk. The closest is Alchemy which is a hop, skip and jump and the other is Zest. Both are great. There is another that you can drive to called Moksa which is absolutely fabulous. Moksa also has a great Saturday morning organic food market. If you like eating meat I have a few suggestions but I’ll wait for some feedback. Penestanan is full of restaurants within walking range and there are literally hundreds in the Ubud area some are local warnings that are incredibly cheap while others are more western oriented and a bit more expensive. Once I know what you like eating I can give you some suggestions.
As far as health/well being resorts I’ll do some research but here’s what we do. Close to the Villa is The Alchemy Yoga Centre, they have various activities from beginners to advanced. The guy who runs the place is American and he’s fit and fabulous. We have 2 massage beds at the villa and have a great team of wonderful masseuses who do genuine Balinese massages, not the tickle and rub type that you’ll find all over the place. Purnami can help you organise these if you want. There is a very eccentric spa/sauna and cold plunge about 10 minutes walk from the Villa at Hotel Tjampuan this could be worth a look, we used to go there all the time until we discovered ParQ which is on the other side of Ubud, a 20 minute drive. The gym there is world class, as are the sauna and cold plunge. We take out monthly memberships. It’s worth a look if nothing else. Let me do some more research into Wellness activities. If you give me an idea of your goals it will help. I’ll see if we can draw some walking maps for you. If you walk along the roads it’s a bit busy but there are loads of wonderful rice paddy walks where you are in the middle of nature it’s just that they are a bit tricky first time.
Sunday September 24, 2023
I never want to stop feeling compassion toward my fellow man. It’s part of my DNA, a desire to help in some way or to make a person feel a little bit better than when I bumped into them. In spite of that I have to disabuse myself of my optimism that shines so brightly when I think I can help somebody. For some ungodly reason that I don’t understand it is just not worth all of the effort that I need to put into it. There’s always some sort of caveat, some sort of excuse, some sort of reason why something can’t be done and the end result is that I give up and have a little bit of a loss. The sort of help I’m offering is outdated, outmoded and far too labour intensive. With the internet reaching it’s tentacles out to almost every man, woman and child on the planet there is so much data available at people’s fingertips for each and every one of them to find some sort of solution to any problem whether it be physical, mental, financial, spiritual, philosophical. It’s all there, on different levels of understanding. All anyone has to do is to look hard enough. If they can’t do that then they sure as hell aren’t going to accept help from little of me.
I’m not ready to write a book, create a podcast, wave a flag that proclaims that I have some sort of answers so for now I’ll just put my attention on my immediate family and myself. It has been a nice diversion over the past 4-5 weeks believing that I can help people however I’ve done what I can now, a smidgen of success, a few little pats on the back. That’s enough for now.
THE FLU
Finn is over it. I’m on the home path and Georgie is lost in the backstreets. It has been horrible. This flu has changed the whole direction of our time in Bali. No use in fighting it or wishing that it hadn’t happened. The trick now is to just all recover and get in with it.
BALI PLANS
We’ve got the ball rolling with our company and visas. Komang is well under way with the renovation of Villa Biru. Georgie has had a meeting with Kris, the builder, about the new entry and plunge pool. All we need now is some land to get our new building project underway and then of course we need to find a great builder/architect. We’ve still got to come up with some more money to cover the cost of transferring our lease for Villa Tusk into the company. It has been an expensive exercise nevertheless an important step in our future in Indonesia.
Saturday September 23, 2023
I’ve still got a horribly mucousy cough left over from the flu I have been battling for the past week. I’m coughing up huge amounts of phlegm especially at night and continually blowing my nose which is emitting thick yellow mucous. Georgie looks like she’s been hit now. Her left ear got badly blocked last night and she started feeling pretty horrible. I also slept weirdly on my neck last night which has resulted in a sharp pain in the left side of my neck.
We went to ParQ yesterday. Georgie and Finn hit the gym but I only made it into the sauna and cold plunge which I must say did help at the time. I had a massage a bit later. My appetite is shot. I’ve pulled way back on carbs and I’m mainly eating protein and fat.
I’ve spent a lot of time and energy over the past few days writing to several friends and family members offering advice and help. To be quite frank I’m over it. Why? Firstly, I seem to place more importance on the speed of communication than they do. I’m getting lots of nice platitudes and thank you but that is not my purpose of helping. Do you give up on help because you feel a bit disappointed with the reactions/responses? Maybe the solution is to pull back on advice and just keep it super simple. I admit that I get somewhat idealistic about helping people and probably expect more compliance than I should ever possibly expect. Hell, I can’t even get Georgie and Finn doing what I want them to.
The best thing I can do right now is to put my attention on my own health and go for broke learning new research results, applications and protocols.
The flu has put a dampener on all the health benefits that I had expected to get during our Bali trip but having said that it has been very positive for Finn. Taking a look in a new unit of time I’ve got to admit that even though I’m not climbing up hills, walking huge amounts and doing strenuous gym workouts even I am benefiting, eating better and learning more. There are always going to be setbacks but there is also something positive to be gleaned from diversions off decided pathways. It’s all about adapting and slowly edging forward in a positive way.
Georgie and I still have 5 weeks left in Bali. We’ve been here for one month so far. We are making progress on what we call bathroom 3 having bought a whole lot of half price tiles from Sadu Tiles. Komang has started getting the tiles up on a back wall, it’s going to look amazing. We are so lucky to have him working for us. I’ve got to remind Georgie that we are making forward progress on a limited budget and that we should feel pretty happy with ourselves.
The next “miracle” that we have to pull off is to get a 7 day booking for the villa during our week in Bangkok. Then we have to find a place to stay for our last week in Bali plus change our flights back to Australia. It would also be nice to find a beautiful piece of land that we could lease during the current trip and get the building process underway.
Friday September 22, 2023
I spent my morning in a bit of a daze writing messages to be people I am attempting to help. I once again thought all was well last night and that I would wake up this morning magically feeling 100%, this wasn’t to be the case. I ended up coughing and spattering all night and finally got out of bed a 9a.m with a big bloody headache and thick, dark yellow mucous stuck in my sinuses, chest and nostrils. Once I realized that I didn’t really have any energy I pottered around writing and procrastinating before we went to the sauna around lunchtime. The sauna is always good value, I leave feeling a hell of a lot fresher than when I started.
Hi Kaye Don’t worry about the wine, the last thing I want to be doing is giving alcohol to people. Georgie and you had discussed leaving a bottle out for guests and I thought that this could be a cheap option. I’ll leave it up to you and Georgie. I’m happy to have an alcohol free life. More importantly, your hair! What is actually happening? Is is alopecia or is it some sort of mineral deficiency. The first step is to get some sort of diagnosis on why its happening. Do you know anywhere you can go to get some tests done? Do you want me to do some research? I’ll need a bit of specific information if I’m going to do this but I’m more than happy to help. Can you estimate how many grams of protein you have each day? I know this might be a tricky one for you but there are ways you can work it out. For your age and weight you probably need about 150 grams a day to keep your muscles intact and also to help with regrowing hair, nails etc. Have you tried looking into collagen? I wouldn’t worry too much as I’m sure there is some natural things you can do to turn this around. We just need to work on it.
In regard to the supermarket, why don’t you just get your daily cappuccino at Nordy, opposite the school. It’s closer anyway. Also you could sit down with Fi and plan out your food needs for the next few days and head of together to the IGA in Dromana. It will give you a whole new dimension on what is available down there. No point in crying over spilt milk. You could buy your organic meat at Torellos and veggies. What else do you need? Anyway, all I’m saying is that there is a solution for every problem and the last thing you need in your life is stress which will just increase your cortisol levels and mess with your insulin and blood sugar.
Hi Lynne I’m so glad you listened to the podcast. There are so many great little educational podcasts that I can send you but this one was a great foundational start. The next thing I’m going to do is to ask a few things and suggest a few things.
A) Do you know whether you are pre-diabetic. Have you done an A1C Blood test. If you haven’t done this I’d recommend it. Takes a couple of hours.
The A1C test measures your average blood sugar level over the past 2 or 3 months. An A1C below 5.7% is normal, between 5.7 and 6.4% indicates you have prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher indicates you have type 2 diabetes.
B) Would you be willing to do daily blood sugar and ketone tests at home? You’ll need a “Freestyle Optium Neo” Blood Glucose and ketone testing machine and some strips for both Blood Glucose and also ketones. You just need to prick your finger a couple of times a day but the information you get will help guide you and also give you an idea on how the BS and KT are going. Maybe do one test when you get up (fasted) and another about an hour after you eat lunch.
C) Do you reckon you could just start with not eating breakfast. You could make yourself a bulletproof coffee which would more than likely keep you going until lunchtime. If you are interested in trying this I’ll give you the “recipe”.
D) The only other thing I would try right now is to eat more healthy fat like macadamia nuts, avocados, sardines, MCT oil, Coconut oil ….. (try to cut out all seed oils), wild caught salmon, grass fed steak if you eat meat, even knock back a spoon of olive oil from time to time. This will help to ward off hunger. You’ll need to get used to this if you decide to try a keto diet anyway. The trick is not to get hungry. Don’t worry about calories.
E) Try to eat 2 meals a day with no snacks. It’s OK to eat as much as you need to feel satisfied. Don’t worry about how much you eat just try to limit the carbs, eat as little processed food as possible, knock back a few salads, whatever you feel good about but don’t eat between meals or after meals or a night.
What are your thoughts? These are just suggestions. I’m happy to go back and forth with you until we hit the best gradient.
Thursday September 21, 2023
The flu I have needs to be named “The Lingering Flu”. It just hangs on and on and morphs into new aches, pains and congestion as the days go by. I feel like I’m on the home stretch now although my head is still congested and hurts. I’m almost back from the shadowlands.
We booked our fights to Bangkok and also found what appears to be a great apartment. Tuesday October 3-10. I’m quite excited about returning to the “scene of the crime”. All I’ve got to do now is to get a decent booking for Villa Tusk for when we are away..
We all went to ParQ late yesterday and had a great time at the sauna and cold plunge. We even hit the gym again for the first time in days for me and weeks for Finn.
I’ve got my body on the way back into ketosis which will hopefully help me to lose some weight and get back on track. I’ve also learned quite a lot about insulin and the nuances of it on the metabolic functions of the body.
WE loaned Komang 3 million rupiah yesterday towards his son’s graduation. He was so grateful. I’ve worked out a solution for him to repay it with his bonuses so it won’t affect his pay or overall income. I feel like we are fitting in here more and more and feel even more excited about the future. If I could only win Tattslotto and help out my staff I would be over the moon.
Response to Lynne F
Hi Lynne Yes, I’m totally with you. Stuff like losing weight is such a personal thing. All I want to help with is trying to give you some of the right things to try at the right time. I’m happy to just be there as a sounding board for you and hopefully to give you some inspiration and advice from time to time.
Here’s what I recommend as a starting point. First I’d set yourself a loose goal, I wouldn’t even put any time on it. Just a bit of a “visualisation” of what you want to feel like, look like in the future. There’s a doctor I listen to called Peter Attia who talks about setting yourself up to be physically, mentally and metabolically prepared for the beginning of your final decade of life (whenever the fuck that is). In other words what you do now is an investment in yourself so that you age happily and gracefully and can still get all the pleasure you deserve out of life.
What I found was the most important thing during my cancer experience and general overall getting healthier was to improve my knowledge of metabolism and understand what happens “under the bonnet”, plus testing different metrics so I had a good concept of my current state. I can go into that later if you like. For now I’m just going to send you a podcast on the role that (natural production of) insulin plays in your overall health and your bodies metabolic functions. Pull the plug whenever you want. Love Gary
New Review on ParQ Sauna
I wrote a review on the Spa/Sauna space at ParQ at the beginning of this year. Since then I have travelled back home to Melbourne and the Spain and Italy. I’m now back in Bali for 10 amazing weeks. Here’s what’s new at ParQ Sauna/Cold Plunge. First and most important for me is that the cold plunge is now perfect. The balance between the sauna and the cold plunge is so important for a great experience and unless you want to freeze your bones I’d say the current balance is close to perfect. The Hamam (Steam Room) is open at night and is also working really well. We usually go during the day when it’s a bit quieter but Sunday and Tuesday nights really light up when people bring percussion instruments and sit in the sauna jamming and singing. Quite an experience. Lastly but also pretty important is the value for money. From my viewpoint and experience you won’t find such good value for money anywhere in the world. True, I haven’t been everywhere in the world but a month at ParQ Spa is about the same cost as an afternoon in a deck chair in Positano and the rewards are far, far greater. I recommend this amazing sauna facility and I’ve been sauna’ing since 1980.
Wednesday September 20, 2023
Getting a bit better is a two sided coin. The really heavy duty feeling is going but there is a lingering mucous driven cough that is persisting, keeping me awake at night and generally adding to my misery.
We went to the sauna last night. This is the first time we have ever been on a Tuesday night and “was it busy”! It’s Jungle Night and the saunas, pool, outdoor area were full of and surrounded with Russians armed with drums and voices doing what hippies used to do 50 years ago. Sitting around beating drums, singing and generally getting into a tribal groove of sorts. The only problem was that we literally couldn’t speak to anyone. I think Finn would have liked to had been more involved but even leaving when we did meant a late dinner, a walk home and a late start to our sleep cycle.
We got our flights booked for Bangkok yesterday, next step is accomodation and contacting people in Bangkok. We leave on October 3 and return on October 10. I’m a wee bit nervous, the ghost of Paul still lingers in Bangkok but only for me. The more I embrace the memories with open arms and celebration to easier it will be to exorcise old memories. This will be my first ever visit to Bangkok as a sober person. The need for alcohol isn’t part of the current agenda but Finn and I will indulge in some other stuff.
This time with Finn is invaluable. We are spending more time together and getting along better than we have in years. Whatever the cost, it is worth it to be able to really get inside each others heads.
Note to Lynne
Hi Lynne It is so good to be back in touch. We got together with Gary and Rosie mainly for Rosie’s sake, she’s such a fabulous lady, Georgie loves her and the idea of not having her as a friend isn’t an option. I’ve just got to be on guard with Gary as you well know. I lavished as much affinity as I could muster on Gary, got through our lunch but have no desire to see him on his own. The trick is to be able to create a “social” relationship with him without getting close ….. like I did a year ago. I really understand your predicament Lynne.
Hey, if you want any advice on your weight I would love to offer you any help that I can give. Even if I was a little like a “CS” being someone you could be accountable to and sending you podcasts etc. I’m still trying to understand metabolism and it’s myriad complexities. I’ve been trying to put on a bit of muscle to see me through my old age. It’s going OK but I also put on a bit of fat, not too much but enough to feel a little uneasy. I’m working on that at the moment. I could recommend some tests that you could do to check your insulin levels, blood sugar (long term) etc because if your metabolism has slowed down even calorie restriction can be an uphill battle. Anyway Lynne, I’m here with open arms and would be happy to offer you any help I can give. That’s great about your feet, good move. I did so much garage to my peripheral nerves when I was drinking. I’m working overtime on repairing that now with red light treatment, supplements and exercise. Slight improvements but nerves are the slowest body part to recover.
Yeah, I’m so happy with our lifestyle. I was so lucky to find Georgie. We love each other in a very balanced way and not only do I love her I like her enough to spend almost all of our waking hours together. I never get sick of her and we always have something to talk about. I’m such a lucky man.
Yep, Finn is here. It’s absolutely wonderful spending so much time with him. I real treat. Being close to my kids has always been one of my biggest pleasures and goals. Lis turned 42 last week and Paul would have been 44 yesterday. I’m pretty much on top of that one now but every now and again I allow myself to sink into the hole for a few fleeting moments. I’m also lucky that Mel and I are still good mates.
Lastly, my overall health is pretty good for an old bloke. I keep forgetting that I am 71. I’ve still got loads of energy and I thinks most of my body parts are doing what they are supposed to be doing. As I said I’m working on building muscle, eating more protein ….. which is hard for me and generally staying fit. I want to live a long, adventurous and active life and then just drop dead one day full of energy and lust for life. Give my love to Mike.
Tuesday September 19, 2023
When a child leaves your orbit, even when they are in their 30s there exists a hole that can never be filled. After a while you just stop trying to fill the hole and spend your energy just not falling into it, getting stuck in the darkness.
Today marks the day that we would have celebrated Paul’s 44th birthday. I often wonder what his health would have been like if he had survived the torrents of his auto immune problems. Without some big changes it is an undisputed fact that he would have been in trouble as a consequence of his Type 1 diabetic condition. Whether he would have had the urge and the self discipline to apply what is now known in the realm of Type 1 diabetes, whether that would have been enough to even slightly turn the tables can only be speculated upon and is pretty much irrelevant because at the time of his death I knew so little about metabolic health that I cringe just thinking about it.
My knowledge is far greater now and I have to face the reality that even with what I know I may not have been able to have had any impact on his health. I was in a mess myself, riddled with stress and self doubt, addicted to alcohol, overweight and metabolically fragile, uncertain about what to do, how to mend a family that was broken by divorce, unpredictability and mistrust. Held back by the constricted mores of a religion in which my own hard line beliefs were faltering and alloyed with doubt.
I was so stressed by my inability to truly help my son, I remained ineffective, randomly moving pieces on the chess board trying to put off the inevitability of the outcome of a game that I had no chance of winning.
All of that is now behind me and as I have said before “All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put Humpty together again”. The finality of death can only be temporarily manipulated in your dreams. How many times have I been granted redemption for a fleeting moment in a dream? Countless. I wake up scratching my head caught up in a temporary moment of hope only to have my short lived expectations shattered by the reality of real life. Once the body has given up the ghost there is no redemption.
I can only wonder and speculate now as to what life would be like with Paul still in it.
Monday September 18, 2023
Yep, I’m still down a dark deep hole and I am nursing an aching, mucous producing, over hot body that is doing whatever it can to fight off this flu that I am harbouring. It has certainly thrown a spanner in the works in regard to my health and fitness regime. Poor Finn is in the same boat but he’s a bit more advanced than I am. Everything I eat tastes pungent and evilly bitter, on top od this my blood sugar levels are out the roof which I imagine is being driven by the inflammation. I have officially become sedentary. Most of what I’ll be doing this morning is answering messages from friends that I have overlooked over the past few days.
Hi Mel
No I didn’t see the photo but we did have a long talk yesterday and she told me all about her trip. Unfortunately I’m not better. I thought that I had this flu that’s ravaging Bali under control and that my immune system was doing it’s job but alas I was wrong. It feels like a mini dose of malaria bit that’s not quite right because nothing comes close to that. The biggest problem is that all of my bodies energy is being used to fight the flu so there’s none left to do normal things and it appears that once it’s got it’s grip on you then it is there for the long haul. So much for health and fitness! Haven’t been to the gym or walked in days. Every night that I go to bed I think to myself that I’ve gone past the worst point but then I have a horrible night although I do think that it peaked on Saturday night. The other weird thing is that my taste buds have gone crazy and everything tastes bitter, yuk, plus I’m like a mucous factory …. my poor immune system is working overtime. Oh well, that’s the price you pay for moving into a new environment and mingling with lots of people. Apart from that all is going well with the company and investment visas. We are going to Bangkok for a week in the first week of October to activate our new 2 year visas, apart from making life easier it will mean that we can get HBOT for half price in future. Georgie hasn’t succumbed yet, I’ve got my fingers crossed that she will be a freak of nature and not fall under it’s spell. We have to stay until the end of October to fully validate our new visas so we’ll be home at the beginning of November in time to plant some late spring veggies. We’ll miss the referendum which I’m OK with because no matter how much that I try I cant make head nor tale of what we are choosing between. In the past I would have just voted yes automatically but now I’m old and cynical I didn’t have much faith in the integrity of our government and it’s hidden motives. How are you and Trinidad doing? I hear that you are enjoying an almost perfect start to spring.
Hi Lynne I feel for you. It was quite a feat getting my circadian rhythm beating the right beats after we got home. It eventually kicks in and you feel normal again. Good luck. I miss Europe, we had such a great time walking, exploring, discovering and feeling like a couple of kids on an adventure. I’m also really loving being back in Bali although a nasty flu has hit the island and I finally succumbed to it, yuk. Finn is in the same boat but Georgie is being the star and is still healthy and well. We had lunch with Gary and Rosie last Tuesday and all went well. I’m treating my “friendship” with Gary quite differently to what I thought I would be a year ago but you win some and you lose some. I don’t think I’m ever destined to have a close male buddy, maybe I’m just more attuned to the female species. We are setting up an Indonesian Company this trip and getting investment visas. The “plan” is to find some land and build another villa that we will rent for a while and then flip and then start all over again. This seems to be the most logical financial path into the future for us but we’ll just have to keep a close eye on what happens and tweet things as we move forward. We are here until the end of November with a week trip to Bangkok in the middle. Then it’s back to Australia for Christmas, back to Bali and then to Japan in April. It seems that we are living a millionaire’s life on a paupers budget but I’m good at that. I’d love to get together with you and Mike again before too long, maybe we need to do a trip up the east coast some time.
Hello Komang Georgie has told me that you want to borrow 3 million from us to help with your son’s graduation. I think I can work out a way to do this but I want you to understand that although we might seem to have a lot of money we are not rich by Australian standards. As I have told you it is important to Georgie and Gary to be able to help our staff when we can. This is why I told you that sometime we will pay you a bonus because we feel that we are all like a family. The bonus will be paid to you when we have enough money. This is my plan. We will give you 3 million which we will have to take from a special account we have in Australia. I will try to get it by Wednesday. To pay it back we will take each bonus that we would have paid off the amount until it is zero (paid back). This way you do not have to pay us money and we will let you know when we are paying a bonus that will come off the debt. I understand that it might be hard to ask us for extra money. Sometimes we can help but others maybe not. I will always be honest and if I cannot loan money I will tell you. I hope you understand what I write. If you have any questions please ask and I will try to explain more clearly. Can you tell me what the money will buy? If we understand this it will help. Gary and Georgie
Sunday September 17, 2023
We are in a gojek driving up the bypass road on our way back to Penestanan after a day out in Sanur. We did a cheap Sunday brunch at Byrds Beach House and lazed around the pool after we finished eating. I’m amazed that I made it at all after last night. I’m pretty certain that my flu peaked last night. I went to bed without eating at around 8 pm and stayed in bed until 9.30 this morning. It was a truly horrible night that was re-elected in the horribly low stats on my oura ring.
Saturday September 16, 2023
This is a different trip to Bali than I have experienced in the past 2 years. The introduction of this flu a week ago or maybe a bit longer if the truth be known has knocked some of the pleasure of early morning walks out of the equation and now that I am at the peak of the symptoms I’m feeling quite happy to just sit still for a while. My oura ring readiness stat is telling me that things are not well with my body and that I’d better take it easy today.
The conundrum for me at the moment is 2 fold. My blood glucose levels are constantly at mildly dangerous levels, on the cusp of pre-diabetes. Most of my readings have been in the mid 5s. It’s almost unbelievable but there are several factors that are occurring. I’m putting on fat around my middle area. The most standout change that I’ve made diet wise is to consciously increase my protein and to introduce creatine into my diet plus I’m taking a whole lot of supplements, particularly B supplements to help improve my peripheral nerve recovery. Obviously there is a fair amount of inflammation being driven by my immune systems response to the flu. Overall Ive been eating quite well. Salads every day with extra protein mainly in the form of whey powder. The other thing that has changed is that I am not doing time restricted eating as I’ve started having the whey powder when I get up.
So here’s what I’m try from next week. Going back to time restricted eating and doing whatever I can to get back into being fat adapted, consequently going back into ketosis. I’ve been out since returning from Bali in March, almost 6 months.
We’ll see what happens
Letter To Richard
Hi Richard I just thought I’d give you a bit of an idea about my thoughts on where to go after Ubud. As I’m not certain what you and your family enjoy I reckon your best bet would be to do a few day trips with Made to different locations. Uluwatu is great if anyone in your family likes surfing. It takes a couple of hours to get down there but a day trip Would be enough to get a feel for the place. There’s a health spa down in Uluwatu called The Istana that has great saunas, cold plunges and an amazing view. Also Blue Point is a fabulous spot to enjoy the amazing sunsets. This could be an option as part of your Bali extension. Another spot is Nusa Penida which is an island off the east coast accessed via Sanur. You can do snorkeling here and it’s a lot more laid back than the mainland. Made could take you up Amed for a day trip so you could get a feel for the place,
so you could check it out and get a feel before you commit. What I often recommend to our guests is to hire Made on a “permanent” basis. He would then be available on a 24/7 schedule for you and your family so if your kids wanted to go into Ubud at night he would be available to drop them if and pick them up. He normally gets jobs throughout the week but if you have him booked exclusively he can take you anywhere on the island close by or far-away any time or day that you want. This costs about $65 US a day but if you can afford it it could be an asset and make things easier and more accessible. He can also suggest things to do and see. It’s probably going to be quieter during your trip than normal so the tourist spots won’t be as crowded. One of my great pleasures is an early morning walk up the Tjampuan Ridge which starts 10 minutes from the villa. Almost at the end of the walk you’ll find The Kastara Hotel/Resort which opens at 7 am, there is a gorgeous birds nest construction that overlooks the ravine. A perfect place to have your morning coffee.
If you are interested in having Made drive for you exclusively let me know and I’ll organise it with him. If this option doesn’t work for you we can work something else out. We’ll still be in Bali when you arrive, we extended our trip until the end of October.

Letter to Lis on her 42nd birthday
Happy Birthday to my precious daughter. Wow Lis. You are now “double 21”. You are well on the way to catching up to me! Except I’m not going to stop any day soon so that might take a while.
I’m a lucky man, a father born under a lucky star. One of the pleasures of my life are my discussions with you. We don’t always see eye to eye on everything but what we talk about, more than not, transcends the mundane and often sparks something to send me in a new direction. I love the fact that you are such a deep thinker, so intelligent, always inquisitive and willing to expose yourself to new ideas, information and are also disposed to challenge what you consider to be true in order to accept new realities. I love that we both love to learn new things and even more that we enjoy sharing our discoveries with each other.
Like I said, I’m a lucky man. I feel sorry for all those fathers who don’t have the relationship that we have. I am blessed with a daughter who I know cares for me and loves me for who I am, who is willing to accept my idiosyncrasies. Thank you Lis. I could never have wished for more.
Now back to the more mundane parts of everyday life. I’m still at war with the virus that is constantly attempting to breach the walls and conquer my immune system. There are holes in the barricades but the battle continues. The end is yet to be decided.
I tried so hard yesterday to have 180 grams of protein but didn’t succeed. My biggest mistake was having some chicken with a battered, breaded coating at lunchtime. I think that for now whey powder and eggs are my biggest ally. I know that I can get 100 grams into me with the whey powder which leaves another 80 grams from animal sources. Should be doable as long as I just stay away from carbs. Should be doable.
We bought some more flowers and plants yesterday then I came back to the villa and went to sleep until 5 when Finn woke me from my slumber and asked if I wanted to go to the sauna. We did and it was fun.
After getting up, having my protein and pottering around a bit we all hopped into mades car for a 7 hour road trip to Sideman to check out Sadu Tiles which we did with great success. The tiles we found are in the “over production” warehouse which is another way of saying they are stacked outside and are half the normal price which works really well for us and what we need to do which is to fix up our 3 bathrooms. Give them a bit of colour and make them look upmarket and exotic. The time and effort to get there will pay off and eventually result in a new vibe for bathroom 3 which is really in need of a facelift.
Letter To Komang re Bonus
Hello Komang
Georgie and Gary want to say how much we are very happy that Komang work for us at Villa Tusk. We thank you. We talk to each other about ideas to help you to increase your income because we know that only we can help by paying you more money. We can pay sometimes “satu juta” for one week (including wage) when we have extra money from guests. We cannot say when we can pay bonus but for example we know that we can pay this in November for maybe 2 weeks. We will let you know when we can do this. As time goes on it will be clearer but for now we will let you know when we will pay this extra bonus which will be 45o,ooo (450 ribu) rupiah extra for one week when we can afford. Please if you have any questions you can ask us. Your happiness and well being of your family are important to us. Can I ask you please not to tell Gary Edwards about this because he ask us to pay you same as him.
Gary and Georgie

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
My immune system appears to be working. Although I am a bit sick with this flu that’s going around Bali it appears that I’m getting a far lesser dose than Finn has. I had congested lungs last night and slept a bit rough, sneezed a few times and feel a bit achy but I’ll possibly be over it by today. Fingers crossed. My aura ring stats are reflecting the struggles that my body is going through.
I was listening to some podcasts on muscle and protein last night, mainly by Dr Gabrielle Lyon. The freaky thing is that in order to create the muscle that I need to to take me into the coming decades I need to have about 190 grams of protein a day. That means that I need to start my day with 2 scoops of whey protein which will give me just over 50 grams with 140 to go! I’ve got 2 small hard boiled eggs ready to eat, I’d be lucky if they contained 10 grams of protein. Ughh!! It looks like pork ribs 100 grams (approx 3 ribs) is about 20 grams of protein.
Wednesday September 13, 2023
I was able to ward of the flu for almost a week but it has finally got it’s gnarly little hands on my throat albeit in a milder dose than Finn had. Well, that’s so far anyway. I had been optimistic that I could escape the virus but alas, it’s got the better of me. I’m taking it easy today. Stayed in bed until after 10 a.m and have just had my B vitamins, supplements and protein drink, I’m now knocking back a bulletproof coffee.
The “world of people” is fucked, the natural world will continue to create itself no matter what people do to it. Nature will win even if it means that it has to wipe out the protagonists. I am constantly staggered by the webs of lies that pour out of the mouths of our so-called leaders, vomit that they somehow make palatable, I am even more concerned that a majority of mankind just accepts what they are told because it is easier that way, most of the lies are so confounded that it becomes easy to believe them unless one actively sets out on a quest to do their own digging, researching and understanding.
We are constantly told that war is a natural circumstance of mankind’s forward progress, that inflation is uncontrollable. The powers that be want us to believe that these negative forces just happen as a natural course of life. Anything and everything can be manipulated because most of us don’t have the willpower or tenacity to dig deep enough to find out what’s actually happening and who is benefiting from the results of the lies. It’s sad and no matter which way you look at it the bad guys are going to continue to win for a while yet, maybe even as long as mankind continues.
I just had a thought. Maybe that would be one of the positives of AI, maybe man’s thinking is so flawed that we need artificial intelligence to guide us to peace.
Note to my Sister
Hi Ginge. Yes, you know me I’m always pretending I’m not an old man. The problem with Bali is that there are so many rules. We are setting up a company and can buy, build, sell, make a profit etc but we CANNOT do any work ourselves. We can’t even post business marketing stuff on social media, it all has to be done by staff otherwise you get deported. Takes a bit of getting used to. To do interior design sort of stuff I would have to have an Indonesian staff member with me 24/7 who I instruct and they do the work!! Sounds crazy. It is. But we’ve heard all sorts of stories about the immigration people and the scams that they get up to. We are looking for land, a builder/architect. We’ve found a Real Estate agent with a Ray White franchise who seems pretty good. The way it would work is that Georgie would work out what we want to build based on the land and then the Indo architect would drawer it up etc, etc. We are learning more each day but the good news is that we stand to do well because we can make about 75% over what we invest if we do a good job, which we will. So it will be one at a time. The current Villa is renting out at $600 a night and that’s going great tuna so we’ll keep on doing that as an AirBnB. Taking it a step at a time.
Letter to Gymnasium ParQ
Hi Annga This is Gary. I said I would send you a message about our gym memberships. Georgina and I will buy 2 month long memberships while we are in Bali this trip, we have already purchased one month on around August 25. We now have to extend our time here in Bali because we have to go to Bangkok for a week on October 1-7 in order to get our investment visas before we return to Australia. We will need to stay for 3 more weeks when we return to wait for out official kitas. Is it possible for us to buy the next month on around September 26 but to put it on hold for one week when we go to Bangkok on October 1. This will mean that we are covered until we leave to return to go to Australia. If possible this would be a great help for us as we have limited money for this trip.
Also our son Finn joined the Gym on around September 1 for one month, he will also go to Bangkok. Unfortunately he got a bad flu after he joined and so has only been able to visit for 2 days for a very short time and since has been in bed, no more visits to gym. Is it possible to restart his membership when he becomes well again? Plus also is it possible to also put on hold for one week when we go to Bangkok. He leaves for Australia on October 2o so if you approve this it will mean that the one month membership will cover him. I know I am asking a lot but I assure you that we will always have a gym membership while we are in Bali. We are even considering building a new villa so we can be closer to ParQ. You have the best gym I have ever been to and it is helping me to grow old and remain fit and healthy.
Tuesday September 12, 2023
I’m not certain what’s happening this morning. My body is aching, the big question at this point is whether it is aching muscles from the gym or aching from the flu that Finn has had. Its just past 7.30 am and I feel like God came to the Villa last night and filled my body with fast drying concrete. I’ve taken 2 ivermectin and 2 pain killers. My nose is a bit “damp” and my lungs feel very slightly congested. If I can allow myself to be optimistic then I’d say that the effects that I am experiencing are my body’s immune system fighting off the flu. Fingers crossed that this is the case.
The meeting we had at 5 last night with Rohan the realestate guy went pretty well but sadly our villa is nowhere near as valuable as we had hoped. Factors like proximity to a car park, distance down the gang, lease length etc make it worth about $300,000 – $350,000. This isn’t the end of the world though, he’s showing us some land down the other end of Ubud maybe on Thursday that could work for our project. The projected ROI would or could be 75% over what we invest. So if we put up $150,000 we stand to make $110,000 profit. Pelan, pelan. If we could pull this off then borrowing the money from our home loan may pay off. How it would work financially is questionable as we would need to put any money we make into our company account. That can come later. But basically if we could build it in 6 months and get it furnished by our arrival in January next year we could rent out Villa Tusk while we are in Bali. The land is 2.8 are so maybe we could build a 2-3 bedroom house on it with a pool, if the location is good we could rent it out for a year on AirBnB or sell it and move forward with our next project. We won’t get an ROI like this on anything else that we invest in. We’ll see. The first step now is to find the land and then find a great builder/architect that we can work with. The next step after we set up our company is to lease the existing Villa to TVB which will cost another $800. The gut feeling is that we are doing OK. We got a great booking for July next year last night, now it’s time to fill up the calendar for Villa Tusk.
We are set to have lunch with gary and Rosie today at 1 p.m at Zest. If I’m well enough this will be another hurdle overcome.
I did a mini DXA at ParQ yesterday. Scratching my head a bit as I’ve put on 10 kg since February, some of this is muscle but most seems to be fat! I have to immediately lose 6.5 kg of adipose fat, maybe a bit of this can be visceral as well. My visceral fat level is 8 which appears to be OK, this is from a study “According to the manufacturer’s information, a rating between 1 and 12 indicates a healthy level of visceral fat, whereas a rating between 13 and 59 indicates excess visceral fat”. This fat loss is going to be a whole new challenge. In the same period my SMM (skeletal muscle mass) has gone up 3.1 kg. It has risen from 35.7 to 38.8. Skeletal muscles comprise 30 to 40% of your total body mass. They’re the muscles that connect to your bones and allow you to perform a wide range of movements and functions. Skeletal muscles are voluntary, meaning you control how and when they work. Body fat percentage has gone from 18.7% to 21.2%. The simple truth is that I’m doing OK. My muscle is increasing which is what I’m going for, now I’ve got to lose a bit of fat. Most of the fat appears to have settled in my belly area as it does.
The InBody scan is a body composition analysis. It measures your body and provides a detailed, yet easy to understand report.
On your results sheet, you will see metrics including weight, total skeletal muscle mass, total body fat, total body water and a full segmental muscle and fat analysis.
By monitoring these metrics over time, we can pin point the changes needed in your diet and exercise to achieve your goals.
Letter to a Guest
Hello Tom
I think you will find Ubud is very different now almost 25 years later. I was very young when you were last here. Miro’s Garden and Lotus are still in Ubud but now there are so many restaurants in Ubud and Penestanan to choose from. My daughter goes to school in Jalan Bisma where Miro’s Garden is on the corner. I will stay in touch closer to your stay with us. What sort of food do your family like to eat, there are many very good vegan restaurants close by but also some simple Balinese places, also 5 star restaurants in Ubud. A very big choice.
Monday September 11, 2023
I’m changing somehow. The workouts at the gym are really taking it out of me and the need for 8 hours sleep is causing me to stay in bed longer in the mornings. Not that it’s tragic, I got up at 7.30 this morning and instead of going out walking I picked up my computer and walked around to Alchemy for something a bit different.
The early morning walks up the Tjampuan Ridge haven’t happened this trip and it’s not that I’m not walking, I did 15,000 steps yesterday, plus an intense workout plus some very potent saunas and cold plunges. But you know, it’s taking me 10 or 11 hours in bed to get 8 hours sleep. That’s not good efficiency and is something that I’m going to have to take a good look at but not just yet.
My feet are changing, it’s hard to put words to how and what is actually changing but I can feel that they are different. Maybe it’s simply that the nerves down there are simply in better communication with the rest of my central nervous system. I am certainly not shirking my daily responsibilities when it comes to PBM (photobiomodulation or red light therapy) and all of my very good quality B supplements.
I have a bit of a tickle in my throat this morning. Fingers crossed that my immune system is fired up to do its job and to protect me against the horrible effects that Finn is experiencing during his flu which has now been going on for almost a week. If all goes well this morning I will take him to the doctor to get checked, I sure as hell don’t want him developing pneumonia.
Now for some serious personal discussion. Penestanan is losing it’s glitter for me. It is getting busier and busier, more built up and overall less appealing. In some ways what I always loved about it was it’s proximity to Ubud and all of the surrounding areas that make up greater Ubud. What I loved most was getting up at 6 am and going wandering but getting Georgie out of bed at 6 am is not an easy task so I’ve got to make some decisions about finding new places to walk, new things to do. We have talked about new projects, new locations, further away from the madness, in the jungle, near a river, more custom made for us. Overall this is possibly a good idea, it’s just taken me a few days to realise this. Whatever we build has to have 3 bedrooms, dedicated work spaces, beautiful outdoor areas and maybe proximity to Parq. As I said, yesterday we did a long walk north of Parq looking at what is available. We found a few spots that really appealed but many that didn’t, the point is that they do exist and it is a possibility.
The thing about life is that new opportunities or circumstances always arise. It is so easy to remain relatively static which is OK but then again I’m not really a static person. I love change.
My main concern at this point of my life is to become strong, fit, healthy, clear headed and well centred. More than anything I have a strong desire to move into my final decades in great shape so I can continue to enjoy the fruits of life. So deep down this is what will dictate my activities and what I am willing to experience. All I need is a hill to walk up and the energy to do it, happy feet, a gym and sauna if possible.
I proved to myself last night that eating shitty food isn’t the way to go. The difference between eating the big salad yesterday and the so called Tom Yum last night plus the bloody pisang goreng was huge.
I’m slowly …. pelan, pelan learning a bit more Bahasa but not at what you would call a fast pace.
Today its 8 …. Delapan.
Satu, dua, tida, empar, like, enam, tujuh, delapan
Sepuluh, duapuluh, tigapuluh etc
Ribu is 1000 duapuluh ribs is 20,000 delapan ribu is 8000. I’ll just practise 8 throughout the day.
Sunday September 10, 2023
So far, so good. I’ve just done an analysis of our spending since we arrived in Bali and it looks like we are on target. We are spending about $110 per day on food and drink. This obviously doesn’t take into account water in the villa and costs like electricity, internet, gas have not been factored in either on the chart but overall I’m pretty happy with our discipline.
We’ve been through some ups and downs this week. Finn developed a flu which has knocked him out of action, Georgie went a bit into doubt in regard to our next steps in Bali and I just got bloody weary from so much exercise, walking, gym, saunas and supplements. Apart from me walking a bit yesterday we had a rest day which might continue into today but I doubt it.
The company and visas are moving along well. At the current rate we will have the company set in a bit more than a week and then get onto the visas. We still have to move Villa Tusk into the company, set up company bank accounts and a few other legal steps. At this point in time it looks like we will fly into Bangkok on Sunday October 1 and return on October 8, we will need to extend our flights back to Melbourne until the very end of October. Finn will more than likely return on the 19th as planned. So here’s a list of what we have to do.
- Wrap up the company.
- Set up a company bank account and reserve account
- Move Villa Tusk ownership lease into the company
- Buy plane tickets to and find and pay for accomodation in Bangkok
- Get our Investment Kitas wrapped up
- Change our flights back to Melbourne
- Extend Georgie’s VOA
- Have meetings with Real Estate guys to talk about land needs and get a valuation on Villa Tusk.
- Find some land to build a new place on.
How am I doing overall? Pretty well I’d say. I’m eating well, hardly any junk but a few carbs are creeping in. I am not in ketosis and my blood sugar is a bit higher than normal but generally I am feeling fit and strong. I am actively working on my neuropathy and have done the PBM (Red light) twice a day plus I am religiously taking my supplements. I had diarrhoea yesterday but this doesn’t seem to be a problem today. Another strange indicator is that my HRV is the lowest it has been for a long, long time for the past 2 days which might mean that my immune system is fighting the flu virus that Finn has. Talking about Finn I think that we might have to get some antibiotics into him because his flu and it’s symptoms are not seeming to get better.
Finn’s flu isn’t really getting any better. Luckily Georgie and I don’t look like we will get it at this stage of the game but anything is possible. Finn’s immune system is probably a bit more compromised than ours. I just noticed that our neighbour who works across the gang has the same cough that Finn has plus Purnami has it as well!
If it’s not better tomorrow morning I’m pretty sure that he’ll need to go to the doctor.
Georgie and I went on a crusade (on foot) this afternoon around the rice fields and villages north of Parq looking for land that might have potential to build on. We didn’t have much luck in our search today but we did get an idea of what the general area is like. It might be best to talk to the Real Estate guy tomorrow to see what he has to offer.
We found out today that Sunday and Tuesday nights are the busy nights at the sauna, there have a thing called Jungle Night where people sit around a fire and sing, play instruments and generally make a noise. We will check this out.
Tomorrow we have the gym in the morning, then the company meeting and then the Real Estate agent at 5 p.m and on Tuesday we have something on the Gary and Rosie and Georgie has a yoga class at 4.
I’ll need to do some research into Bangkok soon as far as the area we want to stay in as well as finding an apartment. I’ll also need to make a list of activities that we can consider doing while we are there as well as try to remember some of the places we used to go to.
Another thing that we have to get under control early in the week is to choose plants for the pots on our front fence.
Saturday September 9, 2023
Didn’t we first meet in September 1975, 48 years ago? At the very beginning of my journey into a whole new direction in my life, a brand new fork in the road.
Back to the subject that I was exploring the other morning. Me as a father. Finn said something time the other night at dinner along the lines of “Hey Boss, you don’t need to use so many words to soften things down just say what you mean.” This is pretty paraphrased but the general gist is that I tend to soften everything down with window dressing. I try to be assertive in a non-assertive way, I want to get my way, my point across without seeming bossy or offensive. Finn can see through me, maybe Paul could as well. The thing is that putting out everyone else’s fires and doing almost buzzard things to not rock the boat are the things that have got me into trouble. Does this have anything to do with the way my Dad lived his life. As a young boy I was quite distant from him, I never really knew how to express my inner most feelings to him, I don’t really think that I thought beyond the simplicity that he was my one and only father. He seemed strict but there was a paternal love. Maybe he just didn’t know how to express his love. Somewhere along the line I think I made a decision that I did t want to be like him, I wanted to treat people with kid gloves, to be gentle as I perceived my Mother to be. Any small outburst from her was like a storm. This is mainly because they were so rare. Did it wanting to be like my father have such a big influence on my life? Quite probably. He was assertive, he called a spade a spade, at times he was downright offensive and I felt deeply embarrassed by his forcefulness and directness. Maybe this was when I started delving into the machinations of getting my own way while appearing to be a nice guy. Here we go again! Gary is a good boy. Words that would haunt me throughout my life. I can’t allow myself to consider compassion and a desire to help others and to be kind as a weakness. But somehow the idea of direct action seems abhorrent to me. I’m always trying to work out ways of getting my message across I. The kindest possible way. Especially toward my children. I’ve always wanted to be the”kind” parent as opposed to the one who makes and enforces the rules. I’m not very good at enforcing rules, I have some inherent consideration that people can control themselves but this isn’t always the case, is it!
Later in the day I spoke to Allissa and surprisingly she told me in a restrained and guarded manner that her observation is that as a father I found it very hard to say NO. Spot on. I’ll have to explore that aspect of myself next because it stands out like dog’s balls that this is a root core issue.
Later in the day I went for a walk down to the antique shop on the way to Katiklangtang, the village south of Penestanan. There are some bits and pieces there that I’m keen on finding out the price but today no-one was there but I did get to take some photos of the pieces that I’m interested in. Komang got the second chair painted red today, finished the coffee table and painted and repaired the glass table bottom. Plus he replanted the bouganvilia that we bought over a year ago but which still hasn’t flowered possibly because it isn’t getting enough sun. Komang also fixed the beautiful lock that he made for our front gate. Next week he starts on the 3rd bedroom bathroom, a big job.
I’ve devised a pay plan for him and also put down some ideas in regard to Purnami’s wage. WE are on the cusp of some big changes
I got a nice response from Brenda Symons
Hi Brenda
Great news that you and Mark are having some quality time together. You both appeared briefly in one of my many lucid dreams last night. I’m so pleased to hear that Mark is working so hard and doing so well under the circumstances, he deserves a huge pat on the back. I have my fingers crossed for him that his surgery is 100% successful in halting the cancer. I also really pleased to hear that he is getting something out of Miriam’s book. Thank you for clarifying my misunderstandings about the naturopath you are seeing. She sounds great. Thank God there are people like her out there who have a more natural and broader understanding of the complexities of cancer.
Can you tell Mark that I wish him well next week and that I’m putting any positivity that I can muster out into the universe for a successful operation.
My recommendations with IVs, Peter and HBOT are to get to Peter as soon as you can after the operation, just do what he says. He’ll give you research papers to read that are impossible to understand, just try to read the “abstract” to get a basic understanding. I trust him implicitly. It’s a big commitment financially and time wise but worth it all. The other thing to consider is that it is a proven fact that HBOT helps significantly with healing so I would also recommend getting Mark into the Oxygen chamber as soon as is humanly possible. It is miraculous. The thing is that the body needs oxygen to heal and HBOT builds up the oxygen stores in the blood plasma so it can aid the body to get oxygen to the cells that need it, plus it is a natural enemy of cancer. I would get 60 hours under my belt ASAP. I did 2 90 minute sessions a day for the first few weeks after my diagnosis and then continued with one a day until I had done 120 hours, it was miraculous and incredibly therapeutic. I firmly believe that this and the IVs were extremely effective in me having no side effects from the radiation treatment that I had and also in my eventual “cure”.
Oh and BTW I really understand how you feel about your Mum and what you must feel like now that the pressure is off. I went through this with Paul. Brenda, now you need to find time for yourself to embrace life and follow your dreams.
Tell Mark that I approached cancer from a point of view that I was the Supreme Commander, I had lots of generals helping me with my strategies. They didn’t always agree with each other but I could use my own research, wisdom. Gut feeling and reason to use them to the best advantage. This worked for me.
Friday September 8, 2023
I’m taking copious amounts of supplements to attempt to help with nerve regeneration in my peripheral areas, particularly my feet. I’m noticing slight changes …. Enough to fill me with optimism and make my efforts worthwhile. I have one problem though which may or may not be connected with the protocols that I am adopting. My blood sugar had risen significantly to the high 5’s and low to mid 6’s. Should I be worried? I don’t know! I have striven for a blood sugar of 4 – 4.5 for the past few years , especially during my cancer period. I’m pretty certain that I am not in ketosis as I’m not even doing ketone testing but I might just do that. This seems to indicate that I am running off glucose as my fuel. This is a whole new situation that I haven’t come up against. I am eating more protein as well as taking 3-4 grams of creatine each day. Could this be doing anything too contribute? I’m also eating more salads than I have eaten in a long time which can’t be all that bad. Overall my dietary and nutritional intake and food quality intake during that past 2 weeks in Bali has been what I would score 8/10.

Just when I thought everything was hunky dory Finn had a bad day and started having second thoughts about being in Bali for the next 6 weeks. It should be OK. Right now I’m sitting in the lounge room of Villa Tusk debating whether I wake Georgie and Finn up now or give them another 15 mins before preparing to go to the gym this morning. I’m feeling up for it. We have a real estate agent coming at noon and then have lunch with Colin organised for 1 p.m. What could we do this afternoon? The Pyramids of Chi? Bijou World? Sanur? Monkey Forest? I was hoping that Finn would have connected with some people by now but this hasn’t happened. Things are a wee bit quiet in Bali at this time of the year. I think it’s time to do a bit of planning and to break the pattern of just heading off to the gym each day. We could go and see Golden Mojo play tonight, I’ll ask the guys.
I’ve just woke Finn and Georgie, it’s 7.15 a.m, neither of them was over the moon with joy so now I wait for the next stage to see what’s going to happen.
The lesson I have learned is that I need to just think about myself in the morning and to head off on my walk like I did in January. When I have to worry about going through the trauma and turmoil.
I’ve also got to work out what to do with our money. We are about to open a new bank account for our PT PMA Company “Tusk Villas Bali”. I will transfer 3,000,000 rupiah (tiga juta rupiah) from our reserve account as soon as we set it up. I’m hoping that we can go to Bangkok in early October when we leave the country to get our investment kitas. This still isn’t set in stone but might look good in the next few days as I negotiate with Georgie and Finn. The other change is that we are adding Allissa to the Company which will make it easier for her in the future to be in Bali and also to do business in Bali.
Message to Meru Manager
We ate at your restaurant tonight, we have eaten several times before and have always been very happy with the service and quality of food. This evening was a disaster. The new space is a disappointment, we should have left when we entered the original space but we were told that Meru was now upstairs.
There were 3 of us. My son ordered Sate Ayam, this was nothing like ayam , the mince was dry and like wood dust. He could not eat his meal, I tried and also confirmed his observations. I had chicken and halloumi salad, this was also very, very inferior. The salad was all chopped up lettuce, the halloumi was wafer thin and limp and the chicken was dry and tasteless, the salad dressing was full of pepper and left a horrible taste in my mouth. My wife had mahi mahi wrap, I’m not certain on her thoughts but there was hardly any fish. All in all it was a huge disappointment especially based on the earlier experiences that we have had at your restaurant,. Based on tonight’s experience we will never come back. I spoke to the poor waitress about the meal but she could do nothing. She told me that the regular chef had resigned on August 25. I don’t know what to say but will leave it with you to respond to me before I write a review of our experience. Our villa is close by in Penestanan and we are regular visitors to Bali. The meal cost 66,000 but this included 2 Roses. The poor waitress was unable to print out our bill because the printer was not working. Overall it was a horrible and unfortunate experience. You should taste the food yourself before other guests have a similar experience.

When I opened my eyes this morning at 4 a.m my body told me that it needed to rest. I reckon I was awake for at least an hour before going back to sleep, a state that I stayed in until just before 8 a.m. I feel like every muscle in my body has been assaulted and needs to recover. It is during times like this that I realise that I need to do some sort of stretching or yoga.
If all goes well we will arrive at the gym at about 10 a.m and get our workouts and sauna’ing done before 1.30 when we will go to Taman Sakti to sign the documents for the company. The beginning of a new era. I’ve also approached the local Ray White Real Estate Agency to discuss land and how much Villa Tusk is potentially worth on the sales market.
I broached the subject yesterday of possibly flying to Jogja and Borododur for a week. I need to convince Georgie and Finn that this might be a good idea before we put the Villa on AirBnB. The whole trip will hinge on whether we can rent the villa for a week or even just long enough to cover the cost of the trip (minus VAT). They are currently deciding so if all goes well I should be able to open up the calendar later today.
Week 3 begins for us today. We still have 6 weeks left to get our projects off the ground and to work out strategies to rent the villa out on a more consistent basis in low season as well as high season. Paying Purnami more money will possibly help with this if nothing else we will be all on the same page.
I must setaside some time to write and make music.
Frustrated Father
As an addendum to what I was writing today I need to investigate my feelings of frustration when I have to “not rock the boat” or “put out a fire”. This often involves 2 or more family members having contrasting intentions or viewpoints.

Allissa brought up an interesting point yesterday about my fathering and the similarities about Paul and Finn. My two boys are 20 years apart in age, spent very little time together and hardly really knew each other which broke my heart but which I have now accepted out of necessity. Finn was just turning 12 when Paul passed away 11 years ago. The story that we have built is that now that Finn is a man that he and Paul would have been close brothers.
They both have an underlying anger which manifests in different ways but this is something that I cannot deny. I’m not an inherently angry person, I would walk away from a verbal or physical fight if I could. One observation is that both Melanie and Georgie manifested anger when Paul and Finn were young. Melanie’s anger was more directed at Paul than at me while Georgie went through a period of intense anger where we used to argue in front of Finn. In my life the angry person usually wins probably because I am a bit scared of the emotion. I grew up with an angry father. Maybe the fact that I’ve spent my life resisting anger has created some sort of dynamic whereby I create some sort of energy to attracts the emotion to my orbit. For a short time during the early years of the millennium I fought back verbally when Georgie got angry but I wasn’t very good at it and withdrew easily, even looking for allies who could console me. I’m over all of that shit now but I have to acknowledge that there was a period in the midst of the madness of Paul’s 20 s that I lost control of my life. To that extent Finn was inadvertently and sometimes directly influenced by the turmoil that I let happen trying to solve problems and put out fires. That’s what I was doing back then, putting out fires. The problem was that as soon as I put one out another one flared up. Always left the embers burning to potentially flare up again.
This hasn’t got me any closer to understanding the similarities between Paul and Finn. If Finn was slim he would look like a tall version of Paul, he has almost the same laugh, he has a propensity toward overindulgence in drugs and alcohol.
I have tried to be a friend and father, maybe not a workable combination. I have an open communication with both of them where they can say pretty much anything to me about their lives and feelings. I forgive easily, I give too readily. By this I mean I haven’t demanded that they work and earn their own way. Paul probably stole more off me
And I never demanded that he repay the debts. Well, I did for a while but more than not I gave up and just moved on which seemed to be the easier way forward.
They both love me and I believe I’ve had an influence on both of them but they are both quite cynical about life and most people whereas I trust people. They both seemed to have a hard time Making new friends or even going out of their way to find new friends which wasn’t the way I was. I was both lucky and desperate at the same time because new friends meant that new doors would open for me. Maybe they didn’t need new doors, maybe I was I always there to hold the door open for them. My Dad had no idea what was going on with my friendships and my battles to grow up and to be accepted by the new groups that I became part of. Have I tried to sneak into both of their lives a bit too much?

Another new week has begun. Life in Bali is as idyllic as it should be. Georgie has decided not to do the Indonesian Course in Sanggingan, so we’ve decided to learn 2-3 Bahasa words each day.
A couple of things that need looking at today are to reassess our spending as well as to take a look at our income sources. We will begin our journey into the world of having a Balinese Company this week when we do the deposit to Ocky for the PT PMA Co. and the 2 visas. I’m looking at this as an investment into our financial future and the beginning of new ventures that will thrust us into a brand new trajectory in life. I’ve got to shed my old considerations that we somehow still have an art gallery, that part of our life is over. The opportunities are endless.
Georgie woke up earlier this morning and came out for a morning stroll with me. We got almost 9,000 steps in, a good start.
The new Young Artists Gallery space is now set up in the Banjar at Penestanan Kelod. It is a wonderful idea but the presentation is horrible. The gaudy frames take away from the beautiful work that the artists are doing. It’s great to see a slight resurgence in the more traditional style of Balinese Art. Should I offer to help? Good question! I’m tempted.
I’m pretty certain that I’m over the big eating day and all of the excess sugar and carbs that were consumed yesterday, now I’ve just got to burn a bit more glucose than usual to get back into a balanced metabolic state.
Sunday September 3, 2023

Happy Fathers Day. Should I ruminate on being a father or just see where this takes me. Today is our big nosh up at The Mulia in Nusa Dua. Four hours of eating delicious food and trying to not get full. It’s a challenge but a good one. Made is picking us up at 9.30 to drive us there. I just ran into Mateus, a German guy I met a few days ago at the Schauberger Coffee Shop, maybe he is the owner. The funny thing is that 80 years ago due to circumstances Matteus may have been a German soldier, even a Nazi. It’s crazy how circumstances dictate the lives of every individual on the planet. Now he lives in Bali and seems happy, friendly and considerate. It’s like the difference between the young Russian and Ukrainian men currently residing in Bali. Looking fresh, hopeful, happy and even optimistic. If they were just relocated to their countries of birth they would instantly be part of the conflagration that is going on in the part of the world and possibly even dead. I’ve been lucky during my life that my circumstances have been relatively kind to me. It’s all behind me now, even the lucid dreams I had last night that seemed to go on and on and on but it turns out that I had 1 hour and forty minutes REM and possibly not all of that was taken up with these seemingly real dreams. My deep sleep was affected by my earphones, that in itself should be enough to prompt me to rip them off just before I drop off to sleep.
I have a bit of a ritual going where I get up just after 6 am and go for a short walk around Penestanan Kelod and then through Penestanan Kaja stopping in the middle for a solitary coffee where so sit and write for about 30 minutes. It’s my time, the walk is gentle but it gets me going for the day. I’ll have to work my way back to the Tjampuan Ridge walk soon before it’s too late. If I can get up at 6 I can leave at 6.15 and be back at 7.30 to wake Georgie up and go for a morning walk with her before she commences her Bahasa class for the day. She starts her classes this coming Monday.
The steps leading to our PT PMA company are coming along fine. We are happy with our decisions and feel that not only will it make our activities in Bali legal but will also help build a foundation for our financial future. The idea of buying land, building villas, renting them for 2 years and then flipping them is very appealing and could be our best option to finance our autumn years.
I’ve been getting back into listening to medical podcasts. My latest find is Uris acid and nitric oxide. I certainly haven’t wrapped my head around them yet but I can see how they are both incredibly important as markers for my health. I think that I have readings from my recent blood tests that I’ll try to search out plus I’ve heard that you can buy a small machine that reads Utica acid in the blood.
Early Evening
We have returned to Penestanan from our Father’s Day buffet at The Mulia. This was much anticipated by all of us, even on the trip down we caressed our hunger in preparation for the huge meal that we were about to endure. There is no doubt, it was delicious, stupendous, wonderful but as usual we all at and drank too much. I of course did not drink any alcohol but Finn and Georgie indulged in the drink package. Georgie is upstairs a bit worse for wear possibly wishing that she had paced herself a bit more during our session. We spent a fortune but Kaye put in $300 and Finn pain $50 toward his drink package. The bottom line is that we had a good time, we had all anticipated doing this eating extravaganza and we did it. I’m pretty much back to normal now and it appears that Finn is as well. We’ll have to wait to see how Georgie emerges from her slumber.

I have been helping a friend with some advice on Prostrate Cancer. Her partner is having surgery in a few weeks to attempt to tear the cancer. She wrote me to say thanks and to let me know what is happening currently. This is my response
Hi Brenda
I’m delighted to hear that Mark is putting so much attention on eliminating anything that can convert to glucose from his diet. It’s so bloody hard and is to be commended. Inherently I have a desire to go overboard with advice based on my own experience but I’m going to restrain myself and just say a couple of things. It’s taken me 70 plus years to realise for myself that we all choose our own journeys based on our own needs and understanding.
Just one question. Did you read my post “ My Body is a Battlefield”? My approach was to listen to any advice that I received but to follow this up with my own research. Most of the people that I chose to be in my army were not necessarily in full agreement with each other but I decided to use them as my generals and to take in their wisdom but to also make my own decisions based on what I saw as the bigger picture. This worked for me.
Here is my advice. If an expert tells you something do two things. Firstly, ask for the research paper, see who funded it and read it to see if it makes sense to you. Don’t just listen, one of the positive things I got from Scientology were the simple words LOOK DONT LISTEN. The second thing is to assess how this advice fits with the overall strategy, will it enhance it or hinder it. This approach made a lot of work and ate up a lot of time but it made me the Croatian of my own ship.
I have not studied prostrate cancer and I also understand that different cancers have their own characteristics so I cannot and would not give any specific advice that relates to this cancer. All I will say is ask the naturopathic oncologist for the study that she is basing her observations on in regard to keto and cancer. Between you and me there is no such thing as a low fat keto diet. The healthy keto for cancer treatment is a well formulated diet that has around 80% fat, 15% protein, and 5 % carbs. If applied scientifically you should get all of your nutrients , it should be all organic, no chemicals, no processed food , no seed oils etc. Without going into it in detail the purpose of this diet is to get the person into nutritional ketosis. This is a very specific metabolic state and can only be gauged by doing daily blood sugar and ketone readings. So when she says a low fat keto diet there is no such thing. Ask her for the data.
The only other advice for now based on the upcoming surgery is to devote as much time as possible studying the benefits of fasting before a cancer surgery. There are huge benefits based on what I have read. Once again, not easy, not pleasant but it could make a huge difference.
Tell Mark that I am more than happy to talk to him if he likes. I’m totally open to this. My offer of help and advice comes from a place of compassion and personal experience. I only scratched the surface but I did a huge amount of study and application that so far has worked for me.
Remember “Look don’t Listen”.
Have a great time in Byron and give Mark my best wishes and wish him luck.
Friday September 1, 2023
Spring has officially begun in Melbourne but I’m not there, still it is comforting to arrive at the special month of September once again.
My thoughts have gone to almost 50 years ago when I had my first Scientology counselling sessions called auditing. I had something called Life Repair in 1975 with an auditor (counsellor) named Gula Kroy who passed long ago, I was told that she was murdered by her daughter and husband myhen they feel that their innermost thoughts are on display and that no thought that you have is private and on top of that every thought that you have is rooted in some action. Have you ever been told not to think about something? Don’t think of a purple elephant! It’s almost impossible. Your mind plays tricks on you and if you believe that there is some deep rooted cause for your thoughts then you are at risk of falling down a deep, murky and dark hole full of empty significance that can become mental trauma if you let it. When you have Scientology auditing you are holding 2 electrodes attached to a device called an e meter. The e meter reads resistance or changes in your physiology based on the premise that if your attention goes somewhere where electrical charge is stored then there must be something there to address. The thing is you can spend hours and hours auto flagellating if you don’t fully understand what you are doing when you are undergoing this e meter counselling. Back then I was a naive 23 year old hippy who had just finished smoking marijuana every day. I was open to almost anything that seemed mystical and spiritual. My naivety was both positive and negative. As usual I digress. The point at hand is the strange thoughts that you have that you are convinced are not your own but you have to take ownership of them to get through these auditing sessions. Overall this counselling went well and I’m grateful that I did it. Talking about taboo subjects or embarrassing secrets was a Positive action and tended to free up my ability to communicate more freely. This isnt to say that the era in one grew up in doesn’t have a profound effect on what you consider to be morally acceptable. Masturbation for example was one of those taboos back then. The thing is that the less you can communicate about a subject then the more power that it has over you. Shame, blame and regret are powerful emotions. The thing with this auditing was that in order to begin you would have to get through a process called “rudiments”. Three questions that often sent chills down my spine. I won’t use the exact wording but the first question was basically “Are you upset with anything?”, the second was “ Do you have a problem that is grabbing your attention” and the third and most deadly was “ are you withholding something that you don’t want me to know about and did I do something to almost find out?”. This was the one that was deadly for me. Maybe it was the one that was deadly for most people. Anyway it caused me so much hardship and pain. The things that I was withholding were sort of OK to talk about. It wasn’t like I had killed anyone or stolen gold from a king. After a bit of stummering and stammering I’d usually be able to cough it up and get in with the counselling.

Things went particularly well yesterday until what seemed to be the early hours of the morning when Finn started sounding like he was a contestant in “The Fight Club”. This was more than likely not really an issue, more of an acoustics issue and the fact that poor Georgie was having to get up and go and check on him. I suspect that the noises had something to do with over consumption of duty free liquor. I have to take a que sera sort of attitude toward Finn over the coming weeks. The best I can do is to inspire him at the gym, in our conversations and by my actions. I haven’t been successful so far in helping him to eat better, stop drinking, lose weight, get a job. This will have to come from him when he is ready for change. I should take a quick look at the awareness levels and see what I can come up with.
What I can do is to look at my own backyard. I reckon that I can set up a few decent projects for myself. One will be to set up my guitar and amp in Bedroom 3, the other is to get out of the starting blocks and start running with my cancer book. Of course there are other projects that I am already working on that could simply be improved.
This morning is significant in that we are having a meeting with our agent, Ocky Misa about the next steps in setting up our company.
Allissa asked “How was your day?”
Day was great. Started with a walk at 6.30 am and at 8.30 am we walked to our Visa guy who is helping with our company and had a meeting. This went well and is well on the way. The immigration guys are getting tough so this is a good step in the right direction. Have learned a lot about the nuances of being a westerner doing business in Bali. We then went to the gym and did a big workout, my muscles seem to be getting stronger and maybe bigger. After this we did several saunas and cold plunge and then ate pork ribs with Finn at a restaurant that only Indonesians go to in Kedewatan (near Sayan). $6 for for a huge plate! Now it’s almost dark so I’ll have a bowl of salad for dinner and some more protein powder after that. A good day.
We are about to head off to TGYR, a Japanese restaurant in our village of Penestanan. After my pork ribs lunch a bowl of salad will be a perfect dinner.
Wednesday August 30, 2023
I’m halfway through a short early morning walk, stopped to have a coffee and write, take in the awakening of Penestanan and generally wake up.
Finn arrived sans incident last night a bit earlier than expected. Georgie got up to greet him. I stayed in bed. That’s our first week over, I’m pretty certain that the dynamic will change today but that’s OK. 3/4 of my family is together.
I spoke to my friend Joe Llatse in Barcelona last night. I had left this far too long but as usual it was as if no time had passed when we spoke. He may come to Bali at some point when we are here.
I’m feeling pretty healthy and strong. Pretty certain that my efforts are paying off. The one exception is still my feet. This week I will intensify my efforts to take the supplements, do the infrared sessions and any other actions that I can take to accelerate the nerve repair that I do desire.
I’ve had 3 massages over the past 3 days with Wayan. I love this time of the day, I love getting a massage.
Gary and Rosie are returning to Bali soon. Gary has reached out and offered an olive branch to heal our fractured friendship. I can do this but I don’t think that I can offer him the same level of trust that I did last year. Initially I thought that I had found a new friend who I could share my most inner feelings and thoughts with but as time went on I became aware that this wasn’t to be. It was a rude awakening but I got over it and now have to rebuild from the ground up, a different less intimate relationship but one that is deep enough to allow us to continue to grow our friendship as a couples and because his wife Rosie is a really special person.
I’ve started to experiment with ChatGPT in regard to writing my book but so far no luck. I’ll keep trying, just a bit each day so I don’t get all stressed about it. I’ve been sending Brenda information and advice re her partner Mark who has prostrate cancer.
We had lunch at Casa Luna, not so good for the first time and later we had dinner at TYGR which we all agreed was fabulous. In between eating we went to the gym. Finn had his first sauna since being back, Georgie and I both did a workout and sauna. This morning after I got back from my walk we pottered around for a while and Georgie and I went out for another walk through Penestanan Kaja, down to the Beni Sudamala Temple and back up to Yellow Flower for a coffee.
I’ve arranged a meeting with Ocky tomorrow morning to go over the Company that we are about to set up.
Tuesday August 29, 2023
We were abruptly woken last night in a shaking bed at 3.55 a.m. It took a while to register what was going on in my dazed state. At first I thought that we were being attacked by small creatures running on the roof like the possums do when they are in the roof in our Melbourne home but as the fog cleared in my brain and consciousness slowly materialized I realized that it was another earthquake. It didn’t seem too bad at first but it kept going for what seemed like minutes. Georgie woke up and we scuttled downstairs in our birthday suits, the pool was shimmering like it was being shaken by a giant. We roamed around in the dark for a minute or 2 and then as it subsided weclimbed back up the stairs to bed and slumber. It turns out that it was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that’s epicentre was in the sea north east of Bali at a depth of about 500 kms. Funny thing is that Georgie said that it didn’t seem as big as the last one, late in 2022, but it was far stronger.
This morning I went for a walk soon after 6 a.m and all was well in paradise. No signs of damage just a gentle morning as the island woke up.
Another earthquake that hit us yesterday was having lunch with our friend Christine Kingston. Half way through the lunch she launched into a horror story about her recent brush with the Balinese Immigration Office. I won’t go into details here but what I came away with was a new viewpoint on the fragility of being an Australian living in Bali and the greyness of the laws in regard to being here and potentially being targeted by immigration officers. We learned a lot and will tread gently as we move forward. In some ways I wish we didn’t hear the story but the truth is that we needed to know all of the nuances of what could potentially happen if we step of the marked line or even while step treading with care.
This is something that we need to go into detail with when we meet with Ocky later this week. We can’t afford to leave any rock unturned or any question unasked.
Having said that, we are here and I am exceptionally happy. Life takes on a new colour, a light shines on my soul, a sense of place takes over and I feel that I belong geographically and spiritually to this wonderful island and it’s people, beauty and culture.
Georgie got up around 8 a.m and had a coffee, we need up leaving for Parq at 9 a.m. I seamlessly changed my sauna shoes on the way after the right shoe broke on the first day I bought them. We arrived at Parq a bit beat and had our obligatory coffee then went to the gym and did a pretty comfortable workout. I could have and should have pushed myself more but this will now have to wait until tomorrow. After the workout we popped down and had several intense saunas and cold plunges and then caught a Gojek back to Penestanan at 2pm for Georgie’s yoga class and my massage. I ate a bowl of salt at TYGR before I started my massage which was heavenly by the way. Then I picked up my coconut milk and here I am back at the villa after doing a few chores around the house and writing this. Georgie is having a nap. Finn iOS on the plane on the way here and we are about to go out for dinner.
Monday August 28, 2023
The new week has begun. We are in our own Villa and the whole feeling of our trip has changed. What a lovely place we have created!! It is truly our home in Bali.
Finn will arrive tomorrow night. I had to renew his VOA because the first one had his old passport details on it. That took quite a bit of time this morning as well as making lists for Finn about what to bring with him, paying for 20 kgs of freight, writing to Allissa and generally tidying things up.
Jeremy (from Melbourne) dropped in to see us last night after we got back from the gym and massages, we met up again a bit later at Casa Luna. He’s an interesting guy who may or may not feature in my future. I also got a message from Gary Edwards last night offering to re-kindle our friendship.
We are having lunch with Christine and Tim today at Rusters. This is happening at 1 pm. The original plan was to head off to the gym and sauna this morning and then go to lunch but after reviewing this I realized that I had too many important things to do and that the strategy had to change. Thank god for pragmatism. It’s something that I’m not always good at .
It’s been a big day. The time is now 6 pm. We’ve spent the afternoon having lunch with Christine and learned some vital information about being an expat Company Director in Bali. Chilling but essential to be in the know. The morning was taken up co-ordinating Finn, Kaye and Allissa as well as some long phone conversations but as the say goes “All is well that ends well” and it appears that this is the case. Thank god I didn’t try to fit the gym in this morning, it may have led to disaster. The next step this evening is too walk to Bintang, get some cash out of the account at Danoman and eat some dinner. I then need to ring Joe Llatse in Spain and go back to bed.
To Kaye
Hi Kaye Thanks for your lovely response. Now re Finn. I have been on the phone with him countless times this morning. My main goal is getting him to calm down and to systematically work through whatever it is that needs to be done to get on the plane. I totally understand that he is distressed but what I’m trying to do is to get his attention on the positives as opposed to the negatives and take it one step at a time. He is currently printing out his Visa and Jetstar stuff. He might need to email the documents to you if he has problems but fingers crossed that all goes well. I feel that If I can work with him step by step all will be well.
I totally understand your disappointment and really appreciate all of the care and love you have put into making his arrival at the airport as smooth as possible. My viewpoint is that he may give us the idea that he is a bit irresponsible at times but I assure you, based on my own observation ….. if he decides to do something, get up on time, arrive somewhere he is pretty damn good and often surprises me. He gets a bit distressed when he feels that we are treating him as an incompetent child. Having said that I’m on your side and fully understand how you feel.
As I said my goal is to get his attention out of inside his head so he can work through whatever issues that are there.
I will stay in touch with both him and you as the day unfolds. I suppose the best way we can both help him is to just do whatever will keep him calm and in control of his emotions.
Allissa will go to the Post Office to pick up the neuropathy supplements in her lunch break. I’ll get in touch with you as soon as I hear from her. I’ve been doing all of the treatments including infra red on my feet every day and it seems to be helping. The stuff she is getting me inset available in Australia and is a really important part of the protocol.
Once again. I really want you to know that I understand your disappointment and know that everything you are doing for Finn is coming from a place of love.

Sunday August 27, 2023
I had to stay in bed for 10 hours to get 8 hours sleep and very little of that was deep sleep. I’m feeling a bit sore this morning after my big workouts on Thursday and Friday. I should feel good about this because in theory it symbolises that my muscles are repairing and will ultimately grow. The bottom line is that I feel a bit weary which may be due to me losing a bit of fitness after coming home from Europe or it may just be that my body is getting older. Well, I’m working on it.
We move to Villa Tusk this morning after we go for a walk, that is if and when Georgie gets up. The good news is that she just threw back the sheets and is on the move.
It’s looking like a somewhat perfect day. I’m ready to brush off the cobwebs and greet it with a smile.
Note To Kaye
Hi Kaye I just wanted to run something by you. We have been piecing our finances together to cover our costs while in Bali, home loan repayments andUtility payments etc hence our stay in the cheaper villa (and renting out our villa) when we arrived to build up our reserves so we can hopefully cover everything. We’ve pretty much worked things out to the closest dollar. Last Sunday I told you about the guest (Nathan) paying approximately $1400 to cover a few days due to cancellation. I mentioned that this included cleaning costs. You said “Leave the cleaning money and you guys can have the balance towards your stay in Bali” so I factored this into our budget. This morning Georgie mentioned that you had changed your mind about your offer. She doesn’t feel comfortable talking about it but I just wanted to run it by you again before we start looking at whether we will need to open up our villa for some more rental days to cover the trip.
Can you let me know whether what you offered is still on the table so I can work out what we need to do. We are trying to limit our spending on food and transport to $100 a day, so far so good but Finn will come tomorrow so that will be more of a challenge. Other costs are the gym, sauna, oxygen, massages, Georgie’s Yoga etc but I’ve got these covered. Including the Red Hill (Nathan ) money we have about $8000 for 2 months which should just scrape in.
Let me know your thoughts on this. I’m not certain whether you forgot about the offer or changed your mind. Just let me know what you want to do so I can work out a strategy.
Things are going great guns. Georgie and I are doing really well but I had to buy Finn a new Visa this morning because the one I already paid for has his old passport data on it and it can’t be changed!! Lucky I realized this before he arrived here.
The only other thing I need to ask you is that Allissa has arranged some really important supplements for my neuropathy. They arrived this morning. I’d love to try to get you and her to co-ordinate to get them delivered to your house in an Uber as Allissa doesn’t have a car at the moment. I can pay the money for the Uber straight back into your account. Would this be OK. I am ringing her soon to organise the arrangements. Allissa’s phone number is 0435 230 545.

Saturday August 26, 2023
It’s 6.30 am on Saturday morning and my only challenge is going to be getting Georgie out of bed to walk up the Tjampuan Ridge. I’ve had another funny night with sleep from about 9.30 until 2.00 a.m and then dozing and listening to podcasts until 6 a.m. I’ll more than likely be OK today on what I had.
Food is going well in Bali. By this I mean that a) we aren’t overeating and b) the quality of the food that’s going down the hatch is pretty good. I’m having a decent amount of protein and pretty low carbs with a good amount of fibre plus my vitamins each day. I’m sticking to the peripheral neuropathy protocols quite well but need to review what I’m up to plus record what I’m doing. I’ll need to check the levels of the supplements that I’m taking.
I’m loving being back in Bali and it will only get better when we move into our villa tomorrow. Yesterday was all about moving, walking, exercise, sauna, we didn’t get back to the villa room until about 7.30 and left at 8am in the morning so it was a big day which included getting a luxurious haircut and beard trim which lasted for an hour compared to what I get in Australia which takes 10 minutes max.
I’m feeling confident that I’m getting healthier and fitter which is my goal.
We had a big day again today. A walk up Tjampuan Ridge, Georgie did a yoga class at Intuitive Flow and I had the first of many massages with Wayan. We had a great salad at Zest and then spent a couple of hours enjoying saunas and cold plunges at Parq and finished the day off with dinner Moksa. It’s 8.30 now, almost time for bed again. The days go so fast. Tonight is our last night at Jungle Villas and tomorrow we go to our own home. Hurray. We’ve planned out tomorrow already so it should be another great day in Bali.
I’m keeping records of our finances each day, accurate records of every rupiah that we spend.
There’s lots to get done while we are here but this can wait until next week when we can begin to work out our strategies and business plans.
Friday August 25, 2023
I have woken up this morning with a aching torso and arms from my workout in the gym yesterday. Today is going to have to be about my legs to give my poor old muscles some time to repair. I possibly didn’t get enough protein into my body yesterday but I am trying harder. I’ll give it another go today. The issue is that we don’t start eating in Bali until late in the afternoon due to Georgie’s gut problems. I’ll have to do a bit more research and a bit more planning.
I really enjoyed yesterday. My happiness peaked at about 4 pm when we ate our lunch at Zest with the guy playing piano behind Georgie and the cool August breeze blowing across the edge of the restaurant.
I didn’t sleep top well last night. I went to sleep soon after 9.39 but then I woke up at 3am sort of wide awake, I started listening to a podcast but lay very still so for the next 4 hours I’ve been in the shadowlands between sleep and wakefulness. I’ll have to create lots of energy today because right now I’m feeling a bit weary. Our plan is to head of at 8am but its not looking too good right now. Georgie is still slumbering in bed.
We will head off to the gym, have a coffee at Mersari and then do a workout and have sauna. By then it will be lunchtime after which we have no plans but I would like to have a haircut and a massage.
Thursday August 24, 2023
Day 2 of our Bali trip begins. It’s not going to be easy getting up early to head of for walks here this morning I woke up at 6.45 but Georgie didn’t sleep well and I daren’t wake her up. I may go for a walk after I finish writing. We’ll see. Georgie isn’t very happy with the Jungle Villas, I should have booked Hotel Tjampuan for the first few nights. What you get for $120 in Bali these days isn’t at all like it used to be, far from it. I’ll try to get a room change organised today or come up with something else that will make her happier. I don’t know what to expect over the next few days so I’ll take it as it comes.
I’ll need to work on my s body fat supplies over the next few weeks. My luck at Zest yesterday was a pretty decent salad. Maybe that’s the direction that I need to go in for the next 2 weeks. I had 2 protein drinks, chicken soup and a crappy fried duck dish for dinner, horrible! For now I’ll stick to the places I know are good. I made a decision yesterday to stay away from ice cream. My decision is to only put nutritious food into my mouth apart from our Sunday brunches where I will try as well.
Our Danoman Debit card is working well. I’ve started writing down the money we are spending.
If all goes well today we will walk to Parq, pay for 2 months and go to the gym and sauna. The time we do this will depend on Georgie.
So far my main observation is that being happy in Bali is greatly impacted by where you stay. The Jungle Villa experience is very different to what it’s like staying at Villa Tusk. Maybe it’s because Villa Tusk is our own home, the location helps, the comfort and aesthetics make a huge difference. This might prove to be a problem as the years go by unless we can create some sort of magical income source.
When Georgie gets upset about something it has a huge impact on the way I feel. This is probably something that I need to take a look at. For example she woke up at 2 am and started a dissertation on the noises in the room, apart from the simple fact that I was asleep at the time this certainly wasn’t a time that I wanted to discuss changing rooms or how unhappy she was with our accomodation. The lesson to learn here is to just always make the best decision based on our resources and the available data. I should know her well enough after almost 30 years to be able to second guess what she likes.
As far as money goes I should just let her know that she can buy whatever she wants and not put any restrictions on her.
So what lessons have I learnt. A) Get us moved to a new room. B) Don’t restrict Georgie’s having Ed’s by niggling about the cost of a glass of wine. C) Get up early enough to take a long walk in the morning so she can sleep in until 8 am.
We are going to really have to put on our thinking caps about how we move forward in Bali. The main priority is to generate some sort of decent income without having to invest too much capital. The other way of looking at it is to create places that we can run as AirBnBs for a year or 2 and then sell. There will be the initial outlay to do the first project and then the affiliated costs. What I need to do is to compare the interest rates on borrowing from our own home loan against the potential return on investment. This way we will be able to create projects that Georgie loves doing and which fulfills her passions and desires, enjoy them for a year or 2 and then get a new one on the go.
I’ll talk to her about this. It might be a better way to move forward than renting small villas for short terms. Let’s see what happens.
This leads me to the future. I have no idea how long so will be graced with the gift of life and consciousness. I’d better start writing a will and attending to the finer details of funerals and such. This will be approached from a pragmatic standpoint and not be any sort of postulate about an early demise.
That was all worthwhile looking at.
It’s dusk now and we are back at the villa, that is the small room that we are staying in. We’ve moved downstairs today which will hopefully resolve the noise issues that Georgie was having problems with. We met the owner this morning, her name is Dewi. During Covid her husband died of a heart attack, Purnami thinks it was bought on by the stress of the backlogging bank loans that they took out to fight through the bloody pandemic. Another casualty.
We’ve walked to ParQ today and joined the gym as well as paid for the sauna for 2 months. This morning we had a long conversation with a guy from Hawthorn named Jeremy. We met at Mersari while we were having coffee. During out time at the gym we ran into an Australian named Jay who is building near Tampaksaring. Then I bumped into another Australian from WA named Craig. A real character who loves to talk and share stories. A lovely guy. We may never meet him again but I’d like to hope that we do. To finish off our afternoon we ate a couple of salads and cauliflower wings at Zest, delicious. We were sitting next to the piano which sits there waiting for guests to tinkle in the ivories. The first guy who played was spectacular, the second good but nowhere near the first player.
A good day which has ended very nicely. So now we either go to bed early or have a light dinner before hitting the sack.
I’m happy.
Wednesday August 23, 2023
The plane trip was smooth as silk apart from a few patches of turbulence. I watched 3 episodes of “Pain Killer” a new series on Netflix about the Oxycontin epidemic in America in the 90s and beyond. Talk about evil. I also created a track on Logic which I really love, possibly one of my best. It came together in lightning speed. On top of this I was able to write a short dissertation on beginning to handle cancer with a ketogenic diet.
We woke up this morning in Bali. Not the Bali we are familiar with but all the same we are in our village of Penestanan in a small room overlooking the jungle. I couldn’t spend more than 5 nights here knowing that our beautiful villa is a 5 minute walk away but we are gaining $2500 with this small sacrifice. August in Bali is mild, the skies are cloudy with a few grey fluff balls floating past, the sounds of the birds and river get louder as you cast your attention toward them and the faint sound of a bamboo gamelan floats sumptuously in the distance. Our room is up high, the villas where we are staying this week are down near Mesari pretty close to Purnami’s house. We are surrounded by treetops, greenery and lushness. Bali on the cheap.
We walked to Mesari and had a coffee, Purnami spotted us sitting up on the second floor and came up to have a chat. After finishing up we walked up to our coffee stop in Kedewatan and had yet another coffee and then walked through the rice paddies to the SIM card shop, got 2 100 gig cards and then bought some supplies at Bintang. Lunch was at Zest, more for Georgie than me. I had a Kyoto salad which turned out to be surprisingly delicious then on the way back to Jungle Villas I picked up 2 bottles of freshly pressed coconut milk. We ran into Made on the way back and now Georgie is having a sleep.
Penestanan is becoming a building site, I’m exaggerating but there is sure a lot of construction going on, not all of it as aesthetically pleasing as it should be. The land to the south of our villa is finally having a building put up, fingers crossed that it won’t impact the small 3rd bedroom Bale too much.
Tuesday August 22, 2023
The day has finally come again. We are heading to Bali this afternoon. I don’t know why I’m so hyper, I’ve got pretty much everything ready. It’s probably just old “software” running in the background, constantly creating things to “need doing” until I walk out the door. The main thing is to finish packing my bags and remain calm.
We are in a decent financial position for our trip. The main problem is our bills for home which I’m sort of working on. That’s one of the big challenges that I’ll need to work on while we are away.
Fingers crossed that our accomodation is OK. We’ve got one more booking before we move into the villa so with the AirBnB money coming and the money from Kaye we should have around $10,000 which will be more than enough.
I have enough supplements to sink a ship, enough clothes to cloth an army. I’ve got my neuropathy boots.
We lost a sale of a Jeff Gardner print yesterday because there was dust in the frame. I ‘m not devastated because I like the print enough to have it in our own collection. That’s my secret. We have 3 decent sized large framed prints by Jeff that I’d like to buy.
Talking about prints, I’m over the whole thing now. I think that we might just need to cut our losses and write off what we have in stock.
Keto For Cancer
The purpose of the ketogenic diet as a therapeutic protocol used as a tool against cancer has nothing to do with losing weight although if you have some excess weight on you chances are you will lose a bit. The purpose of the diet is to get into a state of nutritional ketosis with a glucose Ketone Ratio as close to “1” as possible. I’ll explain the mechanics of this a bit later. The basic idea is to get the liver creating an adequate amount of ketones which can then be used as a source of fuel for the body and brain. You are working toward transitioning your body by switching from glucose as your main fuel source to ketones. If you can achieve this transition you will create a hostile environment for the cancer cells which will more than likely slow down the proliferation of the cancer cells hence slowing it down. There is a whole science to this which is far too involved to go into right now. The ideal ratio of “1” can be attained by having a blood glucose reading of 4 and a ketone reading of 4. It’s not easy unfortunately and takes hard work and immense discipline. But trust me, when you do your GKI calculations and get this result it is worth all the effort.
You will need to understand what the keto flu is and how increasing your electrolyte intake, especially salt, can help prevent these symptoms. You will also need to purchase a blood glucose machine that also measures ketones, plus the appropriate strips used to take the readings. Nutritional ketosis starts when you are getting ketone readings of about 1 but ideally you should be going for a reading of 4. Once again not an easy task. My machine is called Lifestyle Optimum, it works really well and is simple to use. I also recommend keeping accurate records of the readings and the time you take them. The high fat, low carb diet will help maintain a low blood sugar level. The third thing you will need to do is to download an app called Cronometer. This app is used to record all of the food and drink that you put into your body. It’s arduous but invaluable. It will take a while to get used to keeping accurate records but believe me the data that this app supplies is invaluable. It took me a few weeks to get my head around it but once I did it was fine.
All I can say at this stage is that food is medicine for a cancer patient. It can be one of your most valuable tools or if abused it can become your greatest enemy.
Welcome to the world of therapeutic ketosis, a world where food is all about macros and measuring fat, carbohydrates and protein. It isn’t an easy world to be part of but for me the idea of being healthy and cancer free took precedence over the pleasure of eating food for comfort or oral entertainment. Unfortunately you will probably need to plan out your food intake and do heaps of preparation for each days meals, getting healthy and nutritional ketogenic meals for cancer is almost impossible when you are using takeaway or going to restaurants. Don’t trust products in supermarkets labelled keto friendly, consuming this stuff is like going down a slippery slide.
The last thing that I suggest to get the ball rolling is to look into time restricted eating. I tried to make my daily eating window about 6 hours. I made every effort to stop eating at about 7pm and start again at 1 pm the following day. No snacks, just 2 nutritious meals with approx 80% fat, 15 % protein and 5% carbs which can be as low as 20 grams a day. Please note. The word fat has horrible connotations but some of the foods that got into this category are avocados, macadamia nuts, extra virgin olive oil, wild caught salmon, grass fed and finished pork belly, grass fed organic butter, MCT oil. Then idea off eating 80% of your diet as fat may sound horrific but from my viewpoint dying is a worse outcome. Do some research on protein, if you overeat it it can turn to glucose plus you need to do some serious research into glutamine which is another fuel that cancer cells thrive on.
I recommend listening to some lectures by Dr Thomas Seyfried.
