The Self, The Chatter and the Space Between
In many ways, I’ve always treasured my individuality — my apparent separateness, my story, my voice. I’ve held onto my sense of self like a flickering flame on a freezing night. It’s been a source of warmth, purpose, even pride. But lately, I’ve begun to question it.
What is this thing I call “me”? And more importantly… who is doing the asking?
I’ve noticed that the more I chatter to myself — internal banter, old memories, imagined conversations — the more tightly I seem to anchor myself to the illusion that my mind is me. The more I try to protect and polish my past, the more I seem to trap myself inside it.
But when the chatter quietens… when the inner voice fades and the mind becomes still — even briefly — I begin to sense something else. Something more subtle, more expansive. I catch a glimpse of simply being. And though I still carry a fair load of mental clutter, I’m starting to see that perhaps the real me is not the running commentary but the space it echoes through.
It’s strange. I’ve always resisted groupthink, avoided labels, and proudly protected my right to stand alone. I’ve mistaken that independence for strength. But maybe it was fear, ego, and a desire to feel special — a need to stay warm in the cold by tending to a fire that may have always been a flickering illusion.
The irony is, I feel most alive not when I’m deep in self-talk, but when I’m out there — sharing with others, creating beauty, walking through nature, making music, or offering love. In those moments, I forget myself. My attention expands. My little universe touches other universes. And I feel real.
Some people I’ve met say they want to escape this plane — this simulation, this reality, this karmic loop. They want to graduate from the whole game. But me? I think I’d be okay coming back. Maybe I’m too attached to this illusion, this dream. I’ve grown fond of it — the rises and falls, the heartbreaks and epiphanies, the endless human weirdness of it all.
Sure, I jabber away to the “jerk in my head” trying to make sense of it. I search for agreement, reassurance, certainty. But I suspect all that chatter is part of the trap — or at least the fog.
“Still your mind.”
“Become the observer.”
“Let go.”
I’ve heard all those teachings. I’ve dabbled with them. But I see now I’ve mostly been scratching the surface, easing the itch, not truly digging into the wound.
Maybe it’s time to do the harder thing: challenge my deeply held beliefs. Loosen my anchors. Question even the foundations I’ve come to enjoy. Because what if the very things I cherish are what’s keeping me from rising through the clouds… into that metaphorical blue sky I keep hearing about?
So this morning I sit with two simple ideas:
– I am not my thoughts.
– My individuality might be just a role I’m playing.
And I’ll keep squeezing those ideas until every drop of insight is wrung out. I don’t know what I’ll find. I’m not even sure I’m brave enough to look too closely yet. But I do know this: something new is beginning. And that’s enough for now.
